In the world of academia, there’s always room for a little fun and the Finance Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya, as part of Sparks’23 took the initiative to bring laughter and joy for its members. As a part of their Spark’23 initiative, the Directors of this bustling avenue decided to divide the members into four groups, and Group 4, to be exact, decided to choose a rather amusing method by organizing a stand-up comedy show – Comedy ලන්තය’23, which was a night filled with of laughter and companionship.
With only one month to prepare, the Organizing Committee of Comedy ලන්තය’23 started their work on the 25th of August at the first organizing committee meeting followed by a few more meetups throughout the project timeline and worked tirelessly to put together a spectacular evening.
The event was scheduled on the 26th of September, and as the date approached, the enthusiasm within the university grew. The comedians in line included the hysterical “Siril Aiya” and our very own “Soome,” both of whom were well known for their distinct comedic styles.
The audience was met with a vivid stage, decked up with colorful banners, and dazzling lights, greeted the spectators with an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. The comedians took the stage and had the entire room in laughter within minutes. However, this wasn’t just an evening of comedy; it was a fundraiser as well. The Organizing Committee decided to go innovative in their efforts of raising funds. The effort was not just
spearheaded by the External Relations (ER) team but the whole committee collaborated as a team ensuring the success of Comedy ලන්තය’23. The proceeds from the event were directed towards the club’s ongoing projects, making the event not only a source of amusement but also an act of giving back.
In the words of Henry Ford, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success,” the Finance Avenue’s Spark’23 initiative illustrated the power of team work and togetherness in bringing out a memorable evening of comedy. This stand-up comedy show will be remembered as a brilliant gem in the history of the University of Kelaniya, where laughter rang through the halls and warmed the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to be a part of it.
