Down the Wicket ’24 was ignited on 26th October 2024, blending sport and fun in perfect harmony at Polhena Playground (Fortuna Sports Playground). It was an initiative organised by the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue of Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya with the aim of creating new bonds among Rotaractors from all over the island and the players representing other universities.
The precious participation of the honourable guests, Rtr. Umanda Dissanayake, the Joint District Director of the Sports & Recreational Activities Avenue, Rtr. Sharan Balasubramaniam, the Guide Club Coordinator, and Rtr. P.P. Praneeth Madusanka, the Public Relations Chair added significant value to this event.
With the active participation of 29 cricket teams, this one-day cricket tournament was conducted successfully. The tournament continued smoothly, till dark, rainy clouds covered the pitch on the final, nail-biting over. The cricket warriors fought enthusiastically, playing through the rain until it grew into a relentless downpour. However, Down the Wicket ’24 came into an extraordinary conclusion, with three teams of cricket warriors, OUCC Brothers from Open University of Sri Lanka and FCT Gladiators from University of Kelaniya, collectively claiming the championship title, following several pivotal decisions.
This showcases the unpredictable beauty and the unpredictable twists of cricket as a sport. Moreover, in recognition of their outstanding performances, the cricket warriors were honoured with several prestigious awards, including the titles of Best Batsman, Best Bowler, and Player of the Tournament. M. Niyaz from OUCC Brothers emerged as the standout performer, claiming both titles; the Player of the tournament and the Best Bowler. M. Dinushan from Royal Rangers was recognized as the Best Batsman for his exceptional batting performance.
From the very first day of appointing the members of the Organizing Committee on 8th August 2024, they work together to set the ground for this exciting cricketing extravaganza. Under the guidance of the co-directors of the Sports and Recreational Activities Avenue, Rtr. Thanuj Abeyrathne and Rtr. Hashini Bandara, and with the constant support of Rtr. Shahmi Rizwan, the vice president, and with the active contribution of the members of the Organizing Committee led by the Co – chairs Rtr. Namith Senanayake, Rtr. Sithika Himandith, and Rtr. Mujitha Kariyawasam, this project was successfully conducted.
