In a world brimming with temporary solutions and fragmented aid, Ignite Sri Lanka 1.0 emerged as a holistic, heartfelt revolution. Spearheaded by the Community Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya, this project didn’t just offer help—it transformed lives.
Set against the rustic beauty of Giribawa, the project targeted two overlooked yet vibrant villages: Thammannawa and Katupothana. With a vision to uplift every aspect of rural life, Ignite 1.0 unfolded through six powerful pillars—Agriculture, Clean Water, Education, Health & Sanitation, Economic & Entrepreneurship, and Women & Youth Empowerment.
The Health & Sanitation, Economic & Entrepreneurship, and Women & Youth Empowerment were successfully completed in the last term, while the remaining three sectors were implemented in this term.
A Journey of Impact, Not Just Intention
With over 45,000 volunteer hours and the commitment of 24 passionate members, this wasn’t just another project, it was a movement. Backed by Rs. 5,080,000 in sponsorships and fundraising, it became one of the most resource-intensive and impactful community development projects of the year.
1. Health & Sanitation: Nurturing Mothers, Safeguarding Futures
Recognizing the importance of maternal health, we distributed 20 nutritional care packages specifically tailored for pregnant women. These kits were more than just bundles, they were a message of care, hope, and dignity.
2. Women & Youth Empowerment: Building Leaders for Tomorrow
We didn’t stop at today; we invested in tomorrow. Two dynamic one-day leadership camps were conducted, aimed at nurturing confidence, skills, and dreams in the area’s youth.
3. Economic & Entrepreneurship: Reclaiming Self-Reliance
Our investment in the palm industry brought not just tools but training. Over a six-month specialized program, selected women from the community were guided in craftsmanship and business skills. They didn’t just learn to create, they learned to lead. We also introduced them to new market opportunities, enabling income generation and financial independence.

4. Agriculture: Cultivating Hope
Water scarcity was a painful reality for Thammannawa farmers. Through careful surveying and water testing, we established a Rs. 1.4 million Agro-well, fully sponsored by CIC Holdings. This well now nourishes cultivation lands and rejuvenates agricultural hope.

5. Clean Water: From Contaminated to Clean
Access to clean drinking water became a reality for 250 families in Katupothana with the installation of a 750L/day water purification system, sponsored by the Shraddha Charity Organization. For many, it was their first taste of safe drinking water, something we often take for granted.

6. Education: Laying the Foundation
In partnership with the Dilmy Ranaweera Foundation, we donated printing machines to Sri Siddhartha Primary School. We also provided educational materials, renovated classrooms, repainted schools, and installed new name boards for both Thammannawa and Kokmaduwa schools. Notably, the roof of Thammannawa Primary School was also fully renovated, ensuring a safer learning environment.

Beyond Service: Living the Village Life
Our time in Giribawa wasn’t just about giving, it was about connecting. We lived among the villagers, shared their meals, laughed with their children, and listened to their stories under the starlit sky. Their warmth, resilience, and hospitality reminded us why service is not about sympathy but solidarity.
Powering a Legacy of Service
Ignite Sri Lanka 1.0 stands as a symbol of what true community service can achieve. It’s a celebration of sustainable development, strategic planning, and compassionate execution. It also reflects the unshakable strength of the Community Service Avenue, whose vision and leadership continue to raise the bar in service.

With every project like Ignite Sri Lanka 1.0, we don’t just change villages, we ignite movements, lighting up communities with purpose, planning, and people, proving that true change is not only possible, it’s unstoppable.
Together, we didn’t just serve. We sparked a revolution.
