Empowering the Future: International Day of Education 2026

Observed annually on January 24, the International Day of Education serves as a global reminder that learning is a fundamental human right, a public good and a collective responsibility. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 2018, this day celebrates the role of education in fostering peace, driving economic growth and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4).

The theme for 2026, “The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education,” marks a pivotal shift in global educational strategy. It moves away from traditional top-down models, instead positioning young people, who comprise more than half of the global population as active leaders and partners in shaping education. UNESCO’s focus this year emphasizes that students should not merely be beneficiaries of curricula, but designers of them. As we navigate the complexities of climate change and the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, the insights of youth are essential to ensuring that education remains relevant, ethical and inclusive.

Despite these strides, the world faces a staggering reality: over 250 million children remain out of school. This day serves as a call to action for governments to close the digital divide and protect the right to education in crisis-affected areas. By prioritizing youth-led innovation and equitable access, we can transform education into a true engine for a just and sustainable world.
