Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Lihini Ranasinghe

Three years ago, I walked into the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya with no idea of what was ahead. As a Modern Languages student, I naturally selected the International Service Avenue. Little did I know, that simple decision would shape the person I am today.

My first project was Culinary Kindness x Happy Meal, a small initiative that marked a massive shift in my life. I applied simply because I loved cooking, but to my surprise, I was appointed as the Chair. Everything was new to me, the PR materials, captions, coordination. Yet, with the gentle guidance of Disandi akka and the then IS directors, I slowly began to understand what true teamwork looked like. The bond we built within that team still remains one of the most cherished memories of my journey since that was the first of many.

That project opened a door to a new role, as a Team Leader of the International Service Avenue. It was a milestone that helped me develop my leadership and interpersonal skills in ways I had never imagined. And that paved the way for me to meet three superb individuals as my Co-Team Leaders, people who supported me through everything.

However,  if I had to name the true turning point of my Rotaract journey, it would undoubtedly be RotaTomorrow 4.0. Disandi akka encouraged me to apply for the CC role, even when I was unsure if I could manage it with academics. It ended up being the best decision I ever made. Under the mentorship of Rtr. Wickshi, then Community Service Director, I was privileged to work with the most amazing Team 12 as their Team Leader. I think Wickshi akka, was the guiding light I never knew I needed throughout this journey.

Adaren Waruwak, the most memorable initiative within RotaTomorrow 4.0, was truly special. From 4 phases and 12 major awards, including the Best Team Spirit, RotaTomorrow 4.0 Championsip and the Silver Award at the 34th Rotaract District Assembly to late night meetings and tearful goodbyes, we became more than a team, we became a family. And the biggest takeaway? I found a sister for life in my mentor, Wikshi akka. To both Disandi akka and Wikshi akka — I’ll forever be grateful. You were the light that guided me.

Another highlight was Ignite Sri Lanka 1.0 under the Community Service Avenue. I was appointed as the Team Coordinator of the Education Sector alongside my dear friend Sanduni and Wikshi akka, helping to donate photocopy machines and school supplies to two underprivileged schools in Polonnaruwa. The happiness in the children’s eyes reminded me why I chose this path.

Then came a huge milestone and honour of being appointed as the Co-Director of the IS Avenue for 2024–25. Alongside Ruvinath ayya and our ever supportive Vice President Himas, we had only three clear goals at the start: make IS Avenue more visible, increase member engagement, and organize more physical projects. Believe me, I’m so proud to say that we achieved all three.

Together we concluded Merge 2.0, Diversea,  a novel initiative that connected 7 nations beyond borders, We Care 2.0, Harmony Across Horizons, and the flagship EKHOS of Ceylon. Each project reflected the dedication of our outstanding OCs and the beautiful bond within our teams. Our most prestigious initiative, the EKHOS of Ceylon, a tourism project that brought all Rotaractors together under one roof. The trips we took for EKHOS were unforgettable, full of laughter, adventure, and memories I’ll carry for life.

Another four individuals who truly made my Rotaract journey more enjoyable are our Team Leaders, Pruthivi, Anuji, Chamodya, and Kareema. Each of them brought their own unique energy, warmth, and unwavering commitment to the avenue. Whether it was their creativity in projects, their constant support, or just the little moments we shared as a team, they made every experience brighter and more memorable. I’m genuinely grateful for the bond we built.

Lastly, I can’t end this story without mentioning our former President Roshan ayya, an inspiration from the very beginning. His leadership, humility, and guidance set a remarkable standard that many of us, including myself, aspired to follow.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to our President Rtr. Vihanga and our Secretary Rtr.Adeesha for their unwavering guidance, support and inspiration throughout the year. Their dedication truly kept us grounded and motivated, which I believe was one of the main reasons for a very prosperous Rotaract year.

Of course, this journey wouldn’t have been the same without the wonderful support from the BOD and EXCO. The coordination and guidance we received was unmatched and I genuinely appreciate how smoothly we all worked together. I have to admit, I love the DM and Editorial Directors a little extra (yes, I said it!😅) specially Rtr. Deepna and Rtr. Avishna, because they were absolute lifesavers when it came to our PR materials. Their creativity and support made our vision come to life time and time again.

As this chapter comes to a close, I look back with nothing but gratitude, a heart full of memories and deep satisfaction. It wasn’t always perfect, but it was real, I think that’s what made it meaningful. It taught me how to be a leader, a friend, a team player, and most importantly, a better version of myself.

From a curious first year student to someone who proudly signs off with purpose and pride, I am and will always be grateful for every moment. Thank you, Rotaract, for giving me a story worth telling.
