AgroAcres: Cultivating the Future

Project AgroAcres, born from a passionate commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger and responsible consumption and production, has embarked on an inspiring journey to revolutionize agriculture in Sri Lanka. Guided by the wisdom of the project mentor and dynamic leadership of the Team Leaders along with the ASCENDRIA team’s dedicated organizing committee, has hit the ground running, demonstrating the transformative power of technology in the agricultural sector.

Our team name, ASCENDRIA, perfectly encapsulates our aspiration for upward progress and growth within agriculture. Similarly, the project name, AgroAcres, clearly defines our focus: cultivating innovation and positive impact on agricultural land and practices. The initial stages of AgroAcres were marked by meticulous planning and strategic fundraising.

Our journey unfolded in two impactful phases:

Phase 01: Smart Agro Automating the Greenhouse Revolution

Our first phase took us into the realm of smart technology with an insightful YouTube interview featuring Mr. Damsara Wishwajith, a bright undergraduate from the University of Kelaniya. Mr. Damsara introduced his ground breaking “Smart Agro” device and accompanying mobile application designed to automate greenhouse management. Imagine a world where you can control every aspect of your greenhouse with a few taps on your smartphone! Mr. Damsara explained how the Smart Agro app offers two intuitive modes: Auto Mode: This mode provides complete hands-off management. Farmers simply input key plant information and the system intelligently takes over fertilization, watering, and plant health monitoring. A dedicated “View” section provides real-time environmental insights and a valuable knowledge base on plant diseases and optimal care schedules. Manual Mode: For those who prefer direct control, the Manual mode offers on-demand activation of drip irrigation, mist irrigation, exhaust fans, and the light system with simple “On” and “Off” buttons. LED indicators on the physical Smart Agro device provide immediate confirmation of the activated systems.

The beauty of the Smart Agro system lies in its remote accessibility. Farmers can manage their greenhouses from anywhere with a network connection, eliminating the need for constant physical presence. Mr. Damsara’s motivation stemmed from his own agricultural background, recognizing the labor-intensive nature of traditional farming. His innovation aims to simplify agriculture, making it more efficient and less demanding. The advantages of Smart Agro over traditional methods are clear remote control, automated precision and having a user-friendly interface.

Phase 01 successfully equipped our audience with a solid understanding of this transformative technology and its potential to revolutionize greenhouse farming in Sri Lanka.

Phase 02: Taking to the Skies Drone Technology for Efficient Farming.

Our second phase took us to the village of Katupotha on April 9th, where Team ASCENDRIA, accompanied by Mr. Sahan Sankapa, the technical officer from our in-kind partner Sumathi IT, introduced the power of drone technology to local farmers. At the Govijana Sewa Madhyasthana

(Farmer Service Center), our team addressed approximately 63 enthusiastic farmers. We provided an overview of the AgroAcres project and highlighted the immense potential of drone technology in modern large-scale farming. Mr. Sahan Sankapa from Sumathi IT led an engaging session, comparing traditional fertilization methods with the efficiency of drones. He emphasized how drones require significantly less fertilizer solution and can cover vast areas with unparalleled precision.

We also proceeded with the distribution of coconut plant vouchers, generously provided by our gift partner, Tropico Lanka Pvt Ltd. As the next step we moved to a nearby farmland for a live demonstration. The drone showcased its ability to measure the field area and then autonomously spray water (simulating fertilizer application) with remarkable precision. Mr. Sahan also demonstrated the drone’s adjustable speed levels, highlighting its adaptability to various farming needs. The demonstration drew not only the participating farmers but also curious onlookers from the village. Feedback revealed a spectrum of understanding, from those with some prior knowledge to those completely new to drone technology, all expressing keen interest in learning more. Several farmers directly inquired about accessing drone services.

Phase 02 was a resounding success, fostering enthusiasm and appreciation among the farmers. We effectively raised awareness about the practical benefits of drone technology, paving the way for its potential adoption and the modernization of agricultural practices in the region.

Sowing the Seeds of Progress, Project AgroAcres is off to an incredible start! We have successfully showcased the potential of innovative technologies like the Smart Agro device and drone technology to simplify and enhance agricultural practices for Sri Lankan farmers. The overwhelming interest and engagement from the farming community showcased the relevance and potential impact of our project. As we move forward, we are filled with optimism that AgroAcres will continue to cultivate progress and empower Sri Lankan farmers to embrace a more efficient and sustainable future.
