World Red Cross Day

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is a time to celebrate the spirit of humanitarianism and recognize the individuals who make a difference in their communities. This day is also dedicated to the people who are suffering from various natural calamities, armed conflicts, and other crises.

The idea for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day came about after the First World War when an “annual action that could take hold in the whole world… that would be a major contribution to peace” was discussed at the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross. Eventually, the 8th of May was chosen to commemorate the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement because it is the anniversary of the birth of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant and the first celebration of this day dates back to 1948.

The day provides an opportunity every year to celebrate the network of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers, reaffirm the unwavering commitment to common humanity, and reflect on the fundamental principles which include humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteer service, unity and universality.

Various activities are organized on World Red Cross Day to promote humanitarianism and raise funds for the Red Cross such as blood drives, first aid training sessions, fundraising campaigns, public awareness campaigns, and recognition of outstanding volunteers and humanitarian achievements.

Alongside this let us joyously celebrate the World Red Cross Day with the theme announced for 2024 – “I give with joy, and the joy I give is a reward.”

Happy World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day!
