The Sports and Entertainment Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya, initiated project ඇරඹුම to support the development of sports skills among the students of Kurukude Saripuththa Maha Vidyalaya in Pattiyagedara, Bandarawela. The project aimed to supply sports tools and equipment to the school to facilitate the development of sports among the students. The lack of facilities, especially sports equipment, was a major hindrance for many talented students to engage in sports. Therefore, the project aimed to provide the necessary equipment to the school and motivate the students to actively participate in sports activities.
Project ඇරඹුම had multiple objectives, including donating sports equipment to the school to facilitate the development of sports experts, creating a comfortable and resourceful environment for sports, motivating students to actively participate in sports, encouraging engagement in extracurricular activities, and promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports.
In order to execute project ඇරඹුම, the team raised funds through various methods, including sponsorships, food stalls, distributing square cards among organizing committee members, and donations by people. The project conducted four food stalls in different locations where they sold mojito, kebab, and hotdog. Additionally the team also distributed square cards to the members of the organizing committee to raise funds. Many people donated generously to the project, which paved the path to make it a success.
Finally, the project was successfully conducted on the 10th of March 2023. The event was attended by the school staff, including teachers and non-academic staff, school students, villagers, members of the organizing committee of project ඇරඹුම, and members from the Executive Board and Board of Directors of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya.
Through the project ඇරඹුම, the team was able to conduct various activities during the day, including introducing two indoor sports; namely Chess and Carom. The project also donated sports equipment such as discus, medicine balls, dumbbells, javelin, cricket equipment, volleyballs, volleyball nets, carrom boards, chess boards, net balls, badminton rackets, agility training ladders, and many more. The project also donated stationery to the students. The school children also presented a traditional dance at the bonfire during the entertaining event which took place in the evening.
ඇරඹුම was a great success, and it successfully accomplished its objectives which indeed aided to enhance the dream of students to achieve great heights in the sports field.
In conclusion, ඇරඹුම was another tremendous initiative by the Sports and Entertainment Avenue of RACUOK which was established not only limiting to donation of sports equipment but also introducing two new sports to the school and conducting an engaging bonfire program which leveled up the spirits of the students and all the participants. The project team’s efforts were appreciated by the teachers, students and villagers who attended the event, and it is hoped that the project’s impact will be felt for a long time ahead.
