“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
-Nelson Mandela-
Every year on July 18th, we celebrate Nelson Mandela Day, the birthday of this incredible leader who fought for equality and justice in South Africa. But this day is about more than just cake! It’s a call to action for all of us.

Nelson Mandela, born Rolihlahla, was a South African leader who fought against racial discrimination (apartheid). He joined the African National Congress (ANC) to fight for equal rights. Imprisoned for 27 years, Mandela never gave up. Upon release, he became the first black president of South Africa in a democratic election. Mandela’s message of forgiveness and unity helped heal a divided nation.
Nelson Mandela believed everyone had the power to make the world a better place. Maybe you can’t solve world hunger, but you can help someone in your community.
You can help a neighbour in need by delivering groceries to an elderly person who might have trouble getting around. Team up with friends and family to organize a park clean-up and spruce up your community. If you have some extra time, volunteer your skills at a local library to read to children, lend a helping hand at a homeless shelter, or donate blood to a worthy cause. Even small acts of kindness, like leaving a positive note for a co-worker or offering a friendly smile to someone having a tough day, can brighten someone’s day.
No matter how big or small, your actions can make a difference. Remember, even Mandela started somewhere!
This year’s theme is “It’s in your hands.” So let’s join together, inspired by Nelson Mandela, to make the world a little kinder and more equal, one good deed at a time!

“As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself.”
-Nelson Mandela-
