“Religion should unite us for the common good, not divide us over petty differences.”
Dalai Lama
World Religion Day, celebrated annually on the third Sunday of January, with the 2025 observance falling on January 19. This brings people of many religions together to celebrate those fundamental values that link humanity. The Bahá’í Faith initiated this day of honour in 1950 to promote appreciation for shared values across religions and highlight spiritual truths that bring people together.
World Religion Day is significant because of its core message: the concept that all major religions derive from a single divine source and share fundamental spiritual truths. The Baháʼí Faith, from which the day derives, teaches that all religions are ultimately one, with each providing a unique perspective to the universal truths of love, peace, and justice. On this day, people of all faiths gather in a spirit of togetherness and respect, recognising the value of understanding and collaboration across religious communities.

This day is celebrated with various events and activities all across the world. Interfaith gatherings, discussion panels, and educational activities are organised to help people better understand different religions. These gatherings promote mutual respect, tolerance, and a sense of collective responsibility for creating a peaceful and just world. In certain communities, representatives from different religions express their ideas, describing the core principles that guide their lives and examining the commonalities across their traditions.
One of the primary goals of World Religion Day is to dispel myths and biases among various religious communities. By emphasising the shared principles of all faiths, such as generosity, kindness, compassion, and a commitment to justice, the day calls into question the concept that religion divides people. Instead, it emphasises the idea that religious diversity should be embraced as a strength, providing a complex tapestry of cultural and spiritual perspectives that may benefit society.

World Religion Day also offers an opportunity to consider the role religion plays in developing moral ideals and directing personal behaviour. It serves as a reminder that, regardless of religious membership, all people are members of a greater human family with a shared duty to contribute to the world’s well-being.
As we celebrate World Religion Day, we are reminded that the purpose of all religions is to bring humanity closer to peace, togetherness, and love. In a society unstable with separation and violence, the message of this day is more relevant than ever; teaching us that our common values, rooted in religion, have the potential to unite us and lead us to a more harmonious world.
