Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Janooshikaa Kanapathy

Sometimes, the most beautiful chapters in our lives begin with the most unplanned choices. For me, joining Rotaract was one of them, a decision I made on a whim as a first-year student curious to try something new, without really knowing what I was walking into.

I had no idea what to expect. But something about it felt right, like the beginning of something special. And now, looking back, I can say with all my heart, it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

So, in the beginning I felt so lost. I missed the orientation, and i joined community service avenue, coz that’s the only thing that sounded familiar. The avenue called OC for their very first project, and I spontaneously applied as an editor, thinking “okay let’s start small.” And it was something that felt doable.

I wrote my very first caption for a flyer, and little did I know that one caption would be the start of something so much bigger. Slowly, I started saying yes to more. Captions turned into articles, projects turned into passion. What made it all the more special was the encouragement, patience, and warm guidance I received from my directors, Rtr. Wickshi akka, Rtr. Dimithri akka and Rtr. Dinithi akka, and fellow members at the time.

Eventually, I became the editor for almost all the community service projects during the term, and later, the secretary for Project Ignite SL. I loved being behind the scenes, writing, observing, and soaking in every little moment. Contributing to meaningful initiatives that helped shape the club’s identity felt incredibly fulfilling.

One of the most special milestones was being appointed as a Co-Editor for the term 2024–25. From someone who once didn’t even know what being an editor meant, to helping lead the team, it felt like a full-circle moment.

That’s when I officially became part of the Editorial Team. I got to work under one of the kindest and most patient senior editors, a very supportive overlooking ex-co member, and alongside fellow co-editors who became more than just teammates. I’m glad I got to be part of such a beautiful team coz We’ve always had each other’s back no matter what and it truly felt like sisterhood.

And not just our team, the entire board that year was filled with the most incredible people. Sweet, supportive, and genuinely inspiring individuals who made every effort feel worthwhile. From Day 01, I was in awe of the leaders and members around me. Their drive, kindness, and authenticity made Rotaract feel like home.

One of the most cherished highlights during this term was working on Writing Maze 2.0, our editorial avenue’s soul project. Can’t believe we pulled it off, and none of it would’ve been possible without the incredible support and guidance of our secretary, Rtr. Adeesha ayya, and our president, Rtr. Vihanga ayya, who believed in us every step of the way.

And then came RT 5.0, where I stepped into the role of a mentor. To be honest, I never thought I was ready to mentor anyone. But guiding a new batch of juniors reminded me of how far I’d come. I saw myself in them, curious, confused, excited, and full of potential. Watching them grow and take their own paths felt like the biggest reward.

This journey gave me so many “firsts”, and so many “forevers.” My first flyer caption, my first team meeting, my first Rotaract project. And the memories? They’re forever.

But the best part of it all was the people. The gem-like souls I got to share this journey with. What made it even more special was seeing the same friends I started this journey with grow alongside me. There’s a different kind of joy in watching each other bloom, and being each other’s cheerleaders all the way.

To the people I began this ride with and everyone who i met along the way, thank you. You’ve inspired me more than words can say. And to Rotaract, thank you. For the laughter, the lessons, the group photos, the milestones we celebrated, and the kind of memories I’ll carry for a lifetime.

You made my university life richer, brighter, and so much more meaningful.

Grateful and blessed!
