The future belongs to the young, but their time is now.

Every August 12, the world marks International Youth Day, a global celebration of the creativity, resilience, and leadership of young people. Declared by the United Nations in 1999, the day serves not only as recognition of youth potential, but also as a call to address the challenges they face in building a better future.
With over 1.2 billion people aged between 15 and 24 worldwide, youth represent a driving force for innovation and progress. Each year, the UN sets a specific theme, focusing on issues such as education, employment, mental health, climate action, or civic engagement. These themes are more than slogans; they inspire projects, shape policies, and spark conversations that create real change in communities.
International Youth Day is important because it brings attention to both the promise and the struggles of young people. Many face barriers such as unemployment, unequal opportunities, limited access to quality education, and underrepresentation in decision-making. By highlighting these issues, the day encourages governments, organizations, and communities to take meaningful steps toward youth empowerment.

Celebrations happen across the globe in diverse ways: youth-led debates, cultural showcases, volunteer projects, art exhibitions, leadership workshops, and online campaigns, among others. These activities give young people a platform to share their ideas, learn from one another, and collaborate on solutions for local and global challenges.
But beyond the events, International Youth Day is a reminder that youth are not just leaders of tomorrow, they are leaders of today. Their voices, ideas, and actions shape the present as much as the future. By empowering young people with skills, opportunities, and the confidence to lead, we invest in a world that is more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable.
As we celebrate this day, let us not simply acknowledge youth potential, let us actively nurture it. Because when young people are empowered to dream and act, they don’t just change their own lives, they change the world.
