World Intellectual Property Day

Intellectual Property (IP) encloses a variety of intangible assets like inventions, literary works, designs, symbols, and trade secrets, encouraging innovation and creativity. In keeping with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Intellectual Property can be defined as “creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce”. IP grants creators exclusive control, driving economic growth, cultural development, and technological advancements. It encourages individuals and organizations to invest in their time, expertise and resources by ensuring exclusive control over their creations.

There are several types of IP and here are some of them.Patents: Grants an exclusive right to an invention, allowing the owner to decide its use and make technical information publicly available in a published document.

Copyrights: A legal term granting creators exclusive rights over their literary and artistic works, covering a wide range of mediums including books, music, paintings, films, computer programs, and more.

Trademarks: A sign that differentiates one enterprise’s goods or services from others, dating back to ancient times when artisans used their signature on their Products Industrial designs: An industrial design is the aesthetic aspect of an article, encompassing three-dimensional features like shape or surface, or two-dimensional features like patterns, lines, or color.Geographical

Indications: Geographical indications and appellations of origin are signs on goods with specific geographical origin, indicating qualities, reputation, or characteristics attributed to that place of origin.

Trade Secrets: These are the IP rights on confidential information, and unauthorized use or disclosure is considered an unfair practice and a violation of trade secret protection.In 2000, World Intellectual Property Day was declared by the WIPO on 26th April which was the day when the WIPO Convention came into force in 1970. This day is an opportunity to make the general public aware of intellectual property rights, to celebrate the power of innovation and creativity and to explore how IP supports our drive to build a better future.

Every year, World IP Day is celebrated with a specific theme reflecting the existing global challenges and opportunities associated with IP. This day inspires people to take initiatives and actions related to IP in various aspects—for instance, sustainable development, women empowerment in innovation, intersection of IP and sports etc. During 2024, IP day is celebrated with the theme “Building our common future with innovation and creativity”. Overall, World Intellectual Property Day provides a worldwide forum for advancing intellectual property rights, stimulating creativity, and fostering cross-sector partnerships. It emphasizes how crucial intellectual property is to forming our world and spurring progress in the future.
