Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Adeesha Abeydheera

Life at university is often described as eventful and full of memories. When I joined the University of Kelaniya, I soon realized that to make the most of this phase, I needed to go beyond academics and explore the various opportunities available. With this mindset, I enthusiastically joined the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya in my first year. My inclination towards extracurricular activities greatly influenced this decision, as I had been involved in the Interact Club at D. S. Senanayake College during my school years. These experiences collectively led me to embrace the Rotaract journey.

I initially joined the Community Service Avenue during the RI year 2022-23. Additionally, I became part of the Club Relations Avenue and the Editorial Avenue. Just a few weeks into my membership, the organizing committee applications for a project titled “Writing Maze” opened up. After discussing it with my friend Daran who had also joined Rotaract with me, we both decided to apply for the organizing committee. Although at first I applied for the secretary position, it had already been filled, which prompted me to seek a different role. This seemingly minor incident turned out to be a significant moment in my Rotaract journey. Sometimes, the paths we don’t plan for lead to the most rewarding experiences. Afterwards, I decided to apply for the position of co-chairperson. Little did I know that this choice would open doors to incredible opportunities and growth. This unexpected twist allowed me to step into a leadership role, all the while setting the stage for one of the most exciting chapters of my journey.

Writing Maze became a key part of my Rotaract experience, laying the foundation for my deeper involvement. The project entailed creating a novel with contributions from 17 Rotaract Clubs and 3 Interact Clubs. The result of the project was the publication of a novel titled “The Man on the Moon.” This initiative offered me the incredible opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of members from both Interact and Rotaract Clubs. Writing Maze also secured two awards at the Rotaract District Assembly, proving that all our hard work was truly worthwhile. Despite the numerous highlights of this experience, the most enriching aspect for me was the collaborative effort alongside Daran and my fellow co-chair, Wasana Akka who was one of the most caring individuals. Additionally, receiving invaluable guidance from Thedini, the Co-Director of the Club Relations Avenue, who turned out to be one of my closest friends at Rotaract was indeed rewarding.

In the meantime, I joined other organizing committees, including project Click, where I engaged as an editor. I also got the opportunity to compère many events. Having a passion for playing chess, I took part in the Rotaract Champions League and secured the second runner up position.  Another significant moment in my first year was being appointed as a Team Leader of the Club Relations Avenue. Moving on, I also served as a Team Leader under the competition committee for RotaTomorrow 3.0. During this period, we initiated a project titled “Awake and Alive” which focused on drug addiction and rehabilitation. Here, I had the privilege of working under the mentorship of Rtr. Rahma Zuhri who was known for her humility and dedication beyond her duties.

As I transitioned into my second year, I had the honour of serving as the Assistant Secretary of RACUOK for the RI year 2023-24. This role marked a significant leap in responsibility. However, with the guidance of Rtr. Roshan Rathnayake and Rtr. Akshana Wickramasinghe, I swiftly adapted to my new responsibilities. As an executive committee member, I oversaw the Editorial and Public Relations Avenues. Some of my major duties in a nutshell involved reporting, extensive proofreading, and content structuring.

During this term, I also oversaw Click 2.0, the sequel to the project for which I had previously served on the organizing committee. Additionally, a notable highlight of my second year was assuming the role of Chief Editor for Career Fair 2024. Here, our team’s dedication and hard work resulted in the organization of the most successful Career Fair to date. While the initiative demanded thorough effort and long hours, the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction derived from its overwhelming success made every moment fulfilling.

As one might already know, the journey isn’t all smooth sailing. It comes with its fair share of challenges. But fear not! How do I tackle these hurdles, you ask? With sheer determination! Well, perhaps not solely as my coping mechanism involves a considerable amount of phone calls, where I unleash my frustrations and seek solace through my friends Disandi and Dhanushi, because let’s face it, sometimes a good venting session is just what you need. All in all, my second year was also marked by networking. Engaging with my fellow executive members and the board of directors provided me with a novel experience. Also fun fact, once again I placed third in the chess competition at the Rotaract Champions League making it two consecutive terms. I do find it a tad comical as I guess sometimes history does repeat itself.

My Rotaract journey does not end here as the story is yet to be completed. During the latter part, I was appointed as the Secretary-elect for the term 2023-24, marking another exciting milestone in my Rotaract adventure. This new responsibility fills me with gratitude for the experiences and opportunities that Rotaract has provided me thus far. It’s through Rotaract that I’ve learned to push beyond my comfort zone and strive for success.

My journey as a whole was a learning process and I have developed in numerous ways. It has refined my leadership skills, enhanced my ability to work collaboratively, and strengthened my organizational capabilities. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, the value of networking, and the joy of community service. The greatest aspect of Rotaract is the unique blend of serving the community while creating cherished memories and friendships. Every project, whether big or small, demonstrated that with passion and collaboration, we can achieve remarkable outcomes.

As I look back on my journey, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the experiences that have shaped me. The challenges we overcame, the projects we completed, and the bonds we formed are all proof to the enriching nature of being a Rotaractor. Each step taken was a step towards becoming a more empathetic, skilled, and confident individual.

Thus, my journey at the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya has been nothing short of transformative. As I continue this journey, I am excited about the future and eager to embrace the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. To anyone considering joining Rotaract, I can say with conviction that it is an experience that will shape your life in the most profound ways.
