Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Dinithi Thilakarathna

Sometimes, life’s most meaningful journeys begin with a simple, unplanned step. For me, it all started with a flyer I came across while scrolling through social media. At that moment, I had no idea of what Rotaract was. However, I had always been passionate about community service, and something about that flyer compelled me to apply. Just a few days later, I was welcomed as a member for the Rotaract term 2022–23. Looking back, I realize that what seemed like a spontaneous decision became one of the most transformative experiences of my life.

I didn’t know anyone in the club. I had no understanding of how things worked. Yet, despite these uncertainties, I found myself volunteering for my first project—Pensala, under the Community Service Avenue. This was my first true experience of Rotaract in action. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone, introduced me to new faces, and created lasting memories that I continue to cherish. It not only introduced me to the essence of Rotaract but also offered me a sense of purpose, belonging, and a community of like-minded peers. The relationships formed and the experiences gained during that project still stand as some of my most cherished.

Even though my contributions in that first year were small, something inside me shifted. I knew I had more to give. I didn’t just want to take part; I wanted to lead, to make a real difference, and to leave something meaningful behind. So, I decided to apply for the Board of Directors for the next term. To my surprise and excitement, I was chosen as one of the Co-Directors of the Community Service Avenue for 2023–24.

That’s when everything truly started to come alive for me. I had the incredible privilege of working alongside two amazing souls, Rtr. Dimithri Premarathna and Rtr. Wickshi Kalani. They weren’t just co-directors—they became mentors, friends, and a constant source of strength throughout the journey. With their unwavering support and the shared passion we poured into every step, we were able to bring to life two projects that will forever hold a special place in my heart: Swabhasamudra and Ignite Sri Lanka.

These weren’t just projects—they were life-changing experiences. They took me from the northern tip of Jaffna to the shores of the South, and in between, I met people whose stories touched me deeply. Each interaction reminded me of how different yet beautifully connected we all are. Their strength, their resilience, and their warmth left a lasting impact on me. No classroom could have taught me what these journeys did. I learned to truly listen, to feel, to lead with empathy, and to understand the quiet power of coming together for a cause greater than ourselves.

During that same term, I also had the opportunity to mentor a project close to my heart—Heravum, which was recognized as the Most Popular Project at Rota Tomorrow 4.0 and received many more awards. I was deeply honored to be named 1st Runner-Up for Best Mentor.

Then came the final chapter of my Rotaract story. For the term 2024–25, I was appointed as the Sergeant-at-Arms of the club. It was a role that came with great responsibility—supporting the administration of a club with over 650 members, ensuring discipline, and upholding the standards we had worked so hard to maintain. It taught me patience, professionalism, and the value of structure in a vibrant, fast-moving organization. More importantly, it showed me how much I had grown—from a wide-eyed first-year member to someone trusted with protecting the spirit of the club.

I strongly believe RACUOK has its own magic in shaping people and adding value to their lives. For me, that magic wouldn’t have felt as special if it weren’t for two exceptional individuals—Rtr. Rosan Rathnayake, President for the term 2023–24 and Rtr. Vihanga Divyanjana, President for the term 2024–25. Their leadership, warmth, and unwavering support made this journey far more meaningful, and I’m truly grateful to have walked this path with them as guiding lights.

As I reflect on this journey, I’m filled with overwhelming gratitude. Starting as a general member, growing into a director, and ending as the Sergeant-at-Arms, I’ve experienced every emotion—from nervousness and excitement to pride and fulfilment. I’ve had the honor of working alongside passionate young individuals who constantly reminded me of the good that exists in the world. Together, we created change, inspired others, and grew into the leaders we once looked up to.

Rotaract wasn’t just a part of my university life, it became a part of me. The opportunities, the friendships, the challenges, the laughter, the long days, and sleepless nights—all of it has shaped who I am today. The little girl who once wished to serve the community has now lived that dream and so much more.

As this chapter comes to a close, I carry forward not just memories, but a deeper understanding of leadership, empathy, and service. I am immensely proud of all that we achieved and incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be part of an organization that has left a lasting imprint on my life.

Thank you, Rotaract, for being more than just a journey—for being a transformation.
