In 2023, stepping into university life felt like opening a new chapter filled with both excitement and uncertainty. I was eager to embrace every opportunity that came my way — to learn, grow, and find my purpose beyond academic life. Little did I know that joining the Rotaract Club of
the University of Kelaniya (RACUOK) would become one of the most transformative decisions of my university career — a journey that would shape me not only as a student but also as a leader, a team player, and most importantly, as a better human being.
The First Step: Becoming a Rotaractor
I joined RACUOK during my first year, drawn by a passion to serve and a desire to do more with my time at university. I chose the Community Service Avenue — a space that felt just right for someone ready to contribute and create impact.
One project, in particular, stood out: Swabha Samudra. I never imagined that this would become the turning point in my Rotaract journey.
Leading Swabha Samudra: Where It All Began
Being appointed as one of the project chairpersons for Swabha Samudra was both an honor and a challenge. It was my first time leading such a significant initiative, and I poured my heart into every phase. Thankfully, I wasn’t alone — I had two co-chairpersons who felt more like
family than teammates: Rtr. Ravindu Lakshitha and Rtr. Nethmi Medini. Their constant support and incredible teamwork were what made this project so special.
We navigated immense challenges — from coordinating with multiple title partners and
external stakeholders, to executing four detailed phases, culminating in a heartfelt farewell session. It was no easy task. But with the incredible guidance of our three co-directors in Community Service — Rtr. Wickshi, Rtr. Dinithi, and Rtr. Dimthri — and the ever-watchful support of our overlooking Vice President, we made it through.
Our efforts were validated when Swabha Samudra was recognized with two prestigious Gold Awards at the 34th Rotaract District Assembly:
- Most Outstanding Supporting the Environment Initiative
- Most Outstanding Project Focused on District’s Areas of Focus
It was a moment of pride — not just for me, but for everyone who stood beside me.

New Avenues, New Lessons: Member Relations & More
Motivated by the success of Swabha Samudra, I ventured into a Team leadership role in the Member Relations Avenue. One of the most intense yet rewarding experiences came with RotaTomorrow 4.0, where I served as both the team leader and the External Relations (ER) coordinator.
Securing partners and raising funds was no walk in the park. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me the importance of perseverance, communication, and stakeholder management. It was stressful, yet incredibly fulfilling — another powerful milestone in my Rotaract journey.
In addition to that, I was privileged to coordinate and contribute to a few unforgettable projects:
- Jingle Bells: A heartwarming Christmas celebration at an orphanage, where I served as project coordinator. The joy on the children’s faces was priceless — this project remains one of my personal favorites.
- Ignite Sri Lanka: As one of the team coordinators for the agriculture sector, I was part of an initiative to construct a well for the village of Tammannawa in Giribawa — a truly humbling experience.
- Rota Romp 2023: Served as the External Relations Coordinator
- Demons Night: An initiative of the Project Sparks’23 from the Finance Avenue being one of the members in the OC
A New Chapter: Vice President of RACUOK
With the completion of the 2023–24 term, I looked to take on greater responsibility. I was humbled to be appointed as one of the Vice Presidents for the 2024–25 term. This new role entrusted me with overseeing two key avenues — International Service and Member Relations— both of which played defining roles in my second year.

Rotaromp 2024: Strengthening Bonds
Our first major initiative from Member Relations was Rotaromp 2024 — an adrenaline-filled, physically challenging event that brought our club members together through fun, team- building activities. With all five major avenues competing in unbound challenges, the event brought unity, laughter, and camaraderie.
Thanks to the outstanding Organizing Committee, the unwavering dedication of my directors Rtr. Kaveesha Dissanayake and Rtr. Sandhuni Charundya, and the spirited contributions of our members, this became one of the smoothest and most impactful events I’ve ever led. I’m
deeply thankful for your efforts, creativity, and energy.

International Horizons: Projects That Crossed Borders
From the International Service Avenue, we began with Merge 2.0 — a truly global event that brought together Rotaract clubs from around the world to one platform. It set the tone for a powerful year ahead.
Next came We Care 2.0 and Diversity, two initiatives that celebrated global empathy, inclusion, and cross-cultural understanding.
But the project that stood above all was Ekhos of Ceylon. Ekhos of Ceylon: A Project Close to My Heart
This wasn’t just a project — it was a movement. Ekhos of Ceylon became a defining moment in my Rotaract journey.
We highlighted the beauty of Sri Lankan tourism through experiential journeys, cultural
exploration, and collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board. It redefined the meaning of International Service for me — combining purpose, pride, and passion.
We wrapped up the initiative with a magazine launch, showcasing seven iconic destinations across the island. It was a celebration of culture, nature, and heritage — and one of the proudest accomplishments of our team.
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the directors of the International Service Avenue — Rtr. Lihini Ranasingha and Rtr. Ruvinath Uyangoda — as well as to our dedicated team leaders: Rtr. Pruthvi, Rtr. Anuji, Rtr. Kareema, and Rtr. Chamodya. Your leadership, passion, and teamwork brought these international initiatives to life.

RotaTomorrow 5.0: The Challenge I Chose
Despite the pressure, I chose to lead RotaTomorrow 5.0 once again — this time on a bigger scale. It was stressful, chaotic at times, and deeply challenging. But I took it on because I believed in the spirit of the event.
With every team leader and member playing their part, we created something truly special — a celebration of our club, our mission, and our unity. I’m forever grateful to the Member
Relations team and our directors— Rtr. Kaveesha Dissanayake & Rtr. Saduni Charundya — for standing strong with me.
Gratitude: The Foundation of My Growth
No journey is ever walked alone. I owe my growth and every success to the people who supported me:
- Rtr. Vihanga Divyanjana – our visionary President
- Rtr. Adeesha Abeydeera – our passionate Secretary who kept us on track
- Rtr. Shahmi Rizwan – a constant pillar of strength throughout my journey
- And of course, my entire Executive Committee, who made every late night and early morning worth it.
To every director, co-chair, co-leader, team member, and friend who stood beside me — thank you. Your belief in me gave me strength. Your effort made our dreams a reality.

Reflections and the Road Ahead
From a first-year student stepping into the unknown to a Vice President leading impactful projects, my Rotaract journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Every project, every
person, every challenge taught me something valuable — about leadership, resilience, empathy, and community.
Rotaract gave me a purpose, a family, and a platform to grow. As I look ahead, my heart is full of gratitude — and my spirit, full of hope.
I walk into the future ready to serve, ready to lead, and always ready to give back.

Proud proud!✨
