Have you taken a moment for yourself today?
In the middle of busy schedules, endless tasks, and daily pressure, we often forget to check in with ourselves. That’s why International Self-Care Day is celebrated every year on July 24th. It reminds us that looking after our health and well-being is not something we should do only once in a while. It’s something we need every day.

The date 24/7 was chosen for a reason. It stands for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This shows that self-care is a daily practice, not a one-time activity. This special day was first introduced in 2011 by the International Self-Care Foundation. The goal was to help people understand that simple choices like eating healthy, sleeping well, or managing stress which can protect our health in the long term.
The World Health Organization also supports self-care. According to WHO, self-care includes the things we do for our physical and mental health, whether we are sick or well. It includes habits like washing our hands, getting enough sleep, exercising, eating well, talking about our feelings, or taking medicine when we need it. During the COVID-19 pandemic, WHO promoted the message “The Power of Self-Care,” showing how personal health habits can reduce pressure on hospitals and health systems.
Self-care looks different for everyone. For one person, it may be resting for an extra hour. For another, it may be talking to a friend, taking a walk, or simply saying “no” to something that feels too much. It doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. What matters is that it helps you feel better, think clearly, and stay healthy.
We often wait for the weekend or for a holiday to relax. But self-care cannot wait. It should be a part of your everyday life. Taking care of yourself is not a sign of weakness but it is a way of building strength from the inside out.
So today, stop for a moment. Ask yourself how you really feel. Do something small, but kind, for yourself. Because you deserve care not just on July 24th, but every single day!
