Milad-un-Nabi

Milad-un-Nabi, the blessed day of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is one of the most cherished days in the lives of Muslims worldwide. It is observed on the traditional date of 12th Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is a time to remember the mercy, love and guidance with which Allah blessed humanity through His final Messenger. The first official celebration was in Egypt, but it soon became widespread and more popular during the 11th century. This day is not only a celebration but also a reminder of timeless values. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) embodied values that continue to inspire millions, even beyond the boundaries of faith, till today.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a “Mercy to all the worlds” (Qur’an 21:107). His life reflects compassion for the poor, respect for women, kindness towards children, a commitment to justice for the oppressed and forgiveness even towards his enemies. These qualities form the core of Islam’s teachings, showing that faith is not just a set of rituals but a way of life built on peace, mercy and dignity.

One of the most significant lessons from his life is the emphasis on character. He said, “The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.” Honesty, humility, patience and generosity were not just preached by him, but lived in every aspect of his daily life as an example, even for today.

Moreover, in his famous 1978 book “The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History”, Michael H. Hart placed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the number one most influential person in history. The author highlighted his unique success both spiritually and politically.

The day of Milad-un-Nabi is a national holiday in many parts of the world. It is celebrated in almost all Islamic countries, as well as in other countries with significant Muslim populations such as Ethiopia, India, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Nigeria, Iraq, Iran, Maldives, Morocco, Jordan, Libya, Russia and Canada.

As we commemorate this day, let it be a day of renewal not only for Muslims to strengthen their bond with Allah, but also for humanity to reflect on the timeless wisdom of the Prophet. His life is a guiding light, reminding us that true greatness lies in service, mercy and love for all.
