International Day of Clean Energy

January 26 is observed as the International Day of Clean Energy, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of transitioning to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Clean energy, also known as renewable energy, refers to energy produced from natural sources that are continuously replenished and generate little to no harmful emissions. Unlike fossil fuels, clean energy does not significantly contribute to air pollution or climate change.

Globally, the main sources of clean energy include solar power, wind energy, hydropower, biomass, geothermal energy and tidal energy. These sources are widely used around the world to reduce dependence on coal, oil and gas. In the Sri Lankan context, the country has access to several renewable resources, such as hydropower, biomass, solar energy and wind energy. Sri Lanka has long utilized hydropower as a major renewable source, while solar and wind energy are gradually expanding, especially in rural and coastal areas. Biomass, including firewood and agricultural waste, is also commonly used, particularly in households.

The benefits of clean energy are significant. It helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, combats climate change, improves air quality and protects public health. Clean energy also enhances energy security, reduces fuel import costs and creates new employment opportunities in green industries.

However, despite this potential, Sri Lanka still largely depends on fossil fuels, especially for electricity generation and transportation. This dependence increases economic pressure due to fuel imports and contributes to environmental degradation. Strengthening investments and policies in renewable energy is crucial for Sri Lanka’s sustainable future.

On this International Day of Clean Energy, it is essential to recognize that shifting towards renewable energy is not just an environmental responsibility, but also an economic and social necessity.
