Nelson Mandela Day 2026: It’s Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity

“What counts in life is what difference we have made to the lives of others.”
– Nelson Mandela –

A meaningful life is measured not by wealth, fame or how long we live, but by the positive impact we make on others through service, kindness, leadership and support for our communities. Nelson Mandela was one such person who dedicated his life to serving his people and his country.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born on 18 July 1918, was an anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader and statesman who became South Africa’s first Black president and the first president elected in a fully democratic election, serving from 1994 to 1999. Mandela devoted much of his life to fighting against apartheid and promoting national unity.

He was a leader who raised his voice against apartheid and worked towards a peaceful transition, promoting reconciliation, democracy and equality. He also spent 27 years in prison because of his anti-apartheid activism.

In recognition of his efforts, Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, jointly with F. W. de Klerk. To honour his contributions to peace, democracy and human rights around the world, the United Nations officially declared 18 July as ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’ in 2009.

Every year, Nelson Mandela Day carries a theme that encourages individuals to make a positive difference in the world. The theme for 2026 is “It’s Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity,” inspired by Mandela’s belief that every person has the power and responsibility to help build a fairer society.

As a long-standing tradition, Mandela Day also encourages people to spend 67 minutes in service, representing Mandela’s 67 years of public service.

Therefore, ‘Nelson Mandela Day’ is not just about celebrating a great leader, it is a day to celebrate peace, service, compassion and kindness, while inspiring people everywhere to make a positive difference in their communities.
