A society is built by generations, children are the future, they bring motivation, enthusiasm, dreams. Older people, on the other hand, represent the past. They have experiences and carry responsibilities. Both young and old need to be respected, protected and given a chance to enjoy their lives and contribute to society. The importance of this is highlighted during the International Day of Older Persons and World Children’s Day.

The International Day of Older Persons, celebrated on 1st of October, highlights the contributions of older people to society and raises awareness about the challenges they face. As people grow older, they may experience loneliness, discrimination, health difficulties, financial insecurity or social isolation. However, aging should not mean becoming invisible or excluded from society. Older persons have valuable knowledge and life experiences that can be shared with younger generations. Therefore, creating spaces where they can participate actively is important.
Similarly, World Children’s Day is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of children. Children have the right to education, health, safety, family life and opportunities to develop their abilities. However, millions of children suffer from poverty, violence, child labor, discrimination, displacement and lack of access to education around the world. Protecting children goes beyond meeting children’s basic needs and is about creating an inclusive environment that allows them to grow with dignity and hope.

These two observances also remind us that generations should not be separated from one another. Children can learn important lessons from the experiences of older persons, while older people can benefit from the energy, companionship and technological knowledge of younger generations. Intergenerational connections can help build communities based on understanding, empathy and mutual respect.
Finally, the development and prosperity of any country should not be measured exclusively by economic indicators but also by the state of its youngest and oldest generation. World Children’s Day is a call to pay tribute to the future generations and the International Day of Older Persons is a reminder that the contributions of the elder generation should not be forgotten. By caring for both, we can create a society where every stage of life is respected, valued and celebrated.
