International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Every year on 11th February, the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day that highlights the powerful role women play in shaping scientific progress. Although science was once considered a male-dominated field, history proves that women have always been curious thinkers, innovators and change-makers.

One of the earliest and most inspiring figures in science is Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields, Physics and Chemistry. Her dedication, courage and passion show that being a woman is never a limitation in science; instead, it is a strength. For many young girls, including myself, Marie Curie stands as a symbol of empowerment and determination.

Across the world, women scientists have made remarkable discoveries. Rosalind Franklin played a crucial role in discovering the structure of DNA. Jane Goodall transformed the field of biology through her research on chimpanzees. In medicine, countless women doctors and researchers have saved lives through innovation and care, while women chemists and biologists continue to contribute to vaccines, medicines and environmental protection.

Sri Lanka too has produced outstanding female scientists. Dr. Amani Jayawardane, a space scientist at NASA, has contributed to planetary research. Dr. Mallika Samarasekera has made significant contributions to materials science and engineering, inspiring Sri Lankan girls to pursue STEM fields. Sri Lankan women are also excelling as medical researchers, environmental scientists and science educators.

Science opens doors to freedom. When women participate in science as doctors, engineers, researchers and innovators, they gain economic independence, confidence and a voice in decision-making. More importantly, they inspire future generations of girls to dream without limits.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let us celebrate the achievements of women and continue to encourage equal opportunities, because when women rise in science, the whole world moves forward.
