International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development

The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development or also referred to as the International Volunteer Day (IVD) which is held on the 5th of December, celebrates people and organizations who volunteer their time and energy to improve the lives of others. Along with recognizing volunteers, this day also aims to invigorate volunteerism. In 1985, the U.N. General Assembly adopted the resolution for International Volunteer Day. The day has provided opportunities for organizations, governments, foundations, and individuals to set and obtain goals and to recognize the efforts of volunteers from all walks of life.

There are approximately 970 million volunteers throughout the world. This day gives volunteers a chance to work together on projects and campaigns promoting their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels. This day also provides an opportunity for volunteers and organizations to celebrate their efforts, share their values, and promote their work among communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), UN agencies, government authorities, and the private sector.

The International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2022 celebrates the theme of “Solidarity Through Volunteering“. This campaign highlights the power of collective humanity to drive positive changes through volunteerism.

Rising inequalities throughout the world implore that people need to work together to find common solutions. Volunteers, drawn together by solidarity, develop solutions to urgent development challenges and to achieve the common good. Volunteering is where compassion meets solidarity. Both share the same root values supporting each other from a position of trust, humility, respect and equality.

Besides helping others, there are other benefits of volunteering. Volunteerism is good for the health of an individual.  Along with strengthening the body, volunteerism improves mood and lessens stress. People who volunteer obtain the gift of gaining additional happiness and satisfaction in their lives. Volunteerism also gives and spreads positive vibes across people and societies.

Let’s work together and engage in volunteerism together, to make the world a better place!
