Peaසාனம் is a district initiative aimed at creating unity and understanding among Rotaractors by celebrating diverse religious festivities. Phase IV of this initiative, ‘Project Vesak’ representing the Buddhist religion was organized by the Rotaract Club of KDU and the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya to raise member involvement and encourage cultural exchanges, and excitement.
Vesak is a Buddhist festival which celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha. Buddhists worldwide eagerly prepare to celebrate Vesak Day. This triple celebration falls on the full moon day in the month of May, making it a time of reflection, devotion, and community. During the Vesak season they engaged in good deeds according to Buddha’s teachings, such as observing Buddhist precepts and organizing charitable activities.
The event occurred at the Sri Sambodhi Mahavihara Temple on the 10th of May 2024 with the participation of district council members, and members from various Rotaract clubs. A noteworthy aspect of the celebration was its inclusivity, as it successfully conveyed the essence of Vesak to non-Buddhist attendees.
A recent visit to the temple included participation in a community event focused on the creation of Vesak lanterns. Following this activity, attendees joined a bana session where a monk delivered an engaging discourse on youth and love, capturing the attention of all present. After the enlightening session, participants enjoyed an ice cream dansal, sharing ice cream with everyone and the Vesak lanterns crafted during the event were subsequently donated to a temple near Apeksha Hospital, adding 15 beautifully crafted lanterns to their collection.
Creating unity and fellowship among club members by collaborating with other clubs and strengthening relationships and educate participants about Buddhist teachings, traditions, the significance of Vesak, increase awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity and the historical significance of Buddhist practices are the major objectives that we hoped to deliver to the community.
This project was a resounding success, bringing together community members in celebration and reflection. Each activity, from lantern-making to ice cream dansal and lantern donation, was executed with care and coordination, embodying the spirit of Vesak. The teamwork between the Rotaract Clubs of University of Kelaniya and Rotaract club of KDU in the project ” Peaසාனம் ” set a wonderful example of how we celebrate the Vesak festival by achieving our objectives.
The project Peaසාனம் not only celebrated a significant cultural event but also fostered with community spirit, creativity, and compassion.
