In today’s world, where communities face ever-evolving social and economic challenges, the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya continues to lead transformative initiatives with a commitment to making a lasting difference. Among these commendable efforts, Team 9’s project “දිරිය මං පෙත්”, launched under the Rota Tomorrow Initiative, stands out as a beacon of empowerment.
Operating under the theme “Break the Cycle of Poverty through Targeted Support,” this project focused on uplifting the underprivileged coconut crafting community in Ihala Kosgama, located in the Seethawaka region. The core objective was to empower local artisans by enhancing their skills, strengthening financial literacy, and creating sustainable opportunities to develop their craft and livelihoods.
The inaugural phase of the project, conducted on March 23rd, 2025, was strategically designed to uplift the quality and marketability of coconut crafts produced by artisans in Seethawaka. In collaboration with the Coconut Development Authority, the initiative featured specialized workshops addressing two main pillars: marketing strategy education and financial literacy, especially concerning personal banking and money management.
This workshop was made a resounding success through the insights and contributions of Mr. Pasindu Liyanage, Credit Officer at HNB Kelaniya Branch, and Mr. G. Nilantha Roshan Perera, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Marketing, University of Kelaniya. Their expertise provided participants with practical tools and knowledge to navigate both craft-based entrepreneurship and financial planning.

We extend a heartfelt gratitude to HNB, our official banking partner, whose financial knowledge and support were instrumental in executing the first phase. Every contribution was thoughtfully directed toward this meaningful cause.
Sustainability was at the heart of the second phase, conducted on April 4th, 2025, which sought to make a long-term investment in the local coconut-based craft industry. With the support of the Coconut Cultivation Board and the Kosgama Agrarian Service Center, the project facilitated the distribution of coconut plants to the artisans.
An awareness session on effective coconut cultivation practices and issue resolution was led by Mr. Kasun Dananjaya Sooriyaarachchi, Coconut Development Officer and guest speaker for the event. Special acknowledgement is also due to Ms. A. K. D. Shirani Dhammika of the Agrarian Service Center, who was pivotal in organizing the venue and encouraging community participation from the outset.
The Lions Club of Godagama New City also partnered as the official networking collaborator, extending their support to strengthen outreach. In total, 80 coconut plants were donated, representing a powerful, sustainable step toward poverty alleviation. Though seemingly modest, this gesture planted the seeds of self-reliance, allowing families to envision a more secure and independent future.
The success of දිරිය මං පෙත් is a testament to the exceptional teamwork of Team 9’s Organizing Committee. Executing a project of this scale required unwavering dedication, meticulous planning, and a genuine passion for community service. The organizing team rose to the occasion, embodying the spirit of service and resilience.
This project was more than a community service initiative; it was a journey of growth, creativity, and transformation. While the primary aim was to uplift a vulnerable community, the experience also enriched every team member involved.
දිරිය මං පෙත් reminded us that even small actions, driven by compassion and collaboration, can generate powerful ripples of change. While poverty remains a complex issue, it is through sustained efforts, through showing up with ideas, resources, and empathy, that real impact is made.
Together, we have taken one bold step forward. And as we continue to walk this path, we remain committed to the belief that change begins with action and grows with heart.
