I began my Rotaract journey as a fresh undergraduate, without really knowing what Rotaract was or what being part of the club involved. All I knew was that many people talked about it, so out of curiosity, I registered. However, for the first half of the year, I didn’t get involved in anything. I kept wondering what the club did and whether joining would affect my academics or add extra stress.
Then, near the end of my first year, something unexpected happened I was added to a group chat called Fundraising Team 1. Someone reached out to me and asked if I could join a fundraising activity. Without knowing much, I said yes. So, my very first task was to go fundraising in areas covering Borella, Maradana, and nearby neighborhoods. I went with a group of second and third-year students, none of whom I knew. Although I was a bit nervous at first, that day turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable moments of my university life. I made new friends, had great conversations, and finally began to understand what Rotaract was truly about. It was during that activity that I learned we were raising funds for a project called Rotarallia one of the biggest musical concerts organized by the club. I felt so happy and proud to be a part of it, even as a first-year student. That day marked the real beginning of my Rotaract journey, and with that, it marked the end of my first year as a Rotaractor.

When my second year began, I re-registered for the Rotaract Club , this time with a clear intention to get involved from the very beginning. And I did! I participated in several amazing projects that helped me grow both personally and as a team player. One of the most vibrant and unforgettable events I took part in was “Holi Hai” and it was my first-ever Holi celebration. The colors, the joy, the energy it was truly an incredible experience. I also had the privilege of contributing to meaningful and impactful projects like “Arambana”, “Warnayalam”, ‘Prarthana’, and ‘Apen Gamata’. These initiatives had a real effect on communities, and I feel truly grateful to have been part of them.
One of the most personal and unforgettable highlights of my Rotaract journey was Spotlight 2.0, a singing competition organized by the SR Avenue. I’ve always loved music, but singing was something I kept to myself, usually just humming tunes in the bathroom. I always dreamed of performing on stage, but fear held me back. Spotlight 2.0 gave me the opportunity to face that fear. I was selected as a semi-finalist, and standing on that stage felt like a dream come true. It was a small goal, but achieving it made me incredibly happy and proud.

After all these experiences and memories, I applied for the third time and was honored to be appointed as the Director of the Regional Engagement Avenue.
My journey as a Rotaractor began for the third time as a director of the club for RI year 2024/2025 with a thrilling and adventurous leadership camp. One of the most unforgettable memories was during this camp in Kitulgala, where we took part in white-water rafting. It wasn’t just an adventure it was a moment of freedom and courage. I still remember the excitement, the laughter, the splash of cold river water, and how we cheered each other on through every rapid. It’s important to note that if I hadn’t been part of this amazing family, I would never have had the chance to experience such a trip. My parents have always been cautious and never allowed me to go on adventurous outings, especially those involving water. The only reason they agreed this time was because it was a leadership program organized for the directors of the club. They believed it was essential, and that “leadership” label made all the difference. If not for that, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience something so bold and liberating. It made me realize how Rotaract opens incredible doors for personal growth under the banner of leadership and service.
My role as Co-Director of the Regional Engagement Avenue brought its own set of enriching experiences. One of the most meaningful projects I’ve been part of was Project Edu Bridge, where we initiated an English language course for students from under-resourced backgrounds. I still remember the curious faces of the little ones, their hands eagerly raised to answer questions, and how their shy smiles gradually turned into confident laughter. Every bit of their progress, no matter how small, felt like a personal victory. It taught me patience and the true value of consistency and encouragement.Another unforgettable project was Coast Guard, where we organized a beach cleanup and visited a sea turtle conservation center. We gathered early in the morning, armed with gloves, bags, and a spirit of service. The sense of camaraderie we shared while cleaning the beach, the peaceful sound of the waves, and the magical moment of seeing turtles at the conservation center it was all so special. It reminded me that even the smallest act of care can help protect something as vast and beautiful as the ocean.

Then came Jingle Joyland, a project that brought the magic of the holiday season to children who needed it most. We sang carols, played games, and handed out gifts. One little girl hugged me tightly and whispered, “Thank you for coming.” That one moment was enough to fill my heart with warmth for months. Seeing the joy on their faces, hearing their laughter, and feeling their excitement reminded me of the true meaning of service bringing light into someone’s life, even if just for a day. Beyond the projects, one of the most rewarding aspects of Rotaract has been the people. Working alongside members from different clubs taught me the importance of collaboration, understanding, and a shared vision. Everyone brought their own ideas, talents, and energy to the table. Whether we were planning a project, overcoming challenges, or celebrating our successes, the support and teamwork we shared made every effort truly worthwhile.
Rotaract has given me a space to challenge myself, to step up as a leader, and to experience the joy of giving. It was never just about the work—it was about the laughter during project planning, the late-night brainstorming calls, the friendships built through service, and the deep satisfaction of making even the smallest difference. Each project has left a lasting mark on my heart, and every memory reminds me why I chose this path. Now, as I bring my Rotaract journey to a close, I look back with immense gratitude. Everything I’ve experienced along the way has shaped me into a more confident, compassionate, and connected version of myself.Joining Rotaract has been one of the most transformative decisions of my life. It gave me the space to grow, to serve, to lead, and most importantly, to connect—with people, with communities, and with myself. As I move forward, I carry with me not just memories, but values, lessons, and a heart full of appreciation. My Rotaract journey has been a beautiful blend of adventure, responsibility, and heartwarming experiences ones I will treasure for a lifetime.Though this chapter is ending, the spirit of Rotaract will always live within me.

Wish you all the very best ishini. Keep shining as always ❤️
