Rota Wasantha Udanaya ’24: A Festive Extravaganza

On the 27th of April, the Hunupitiya Bandaranayaka School Grounds transformed into a vibrant hub of culture and celebration as the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya hosted a joyous Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration. Nearly 100 Rotaractors and non-Rotaractors adorned in beautiful traditional attire came together to partake in the festivities, marking the unity and cultural richness cherished by the Rotaract family.

The event commenced with the auspicious ritual of ‘Kiri ithiraweema,’ led by the executive committee members and board members of the club. This symbolic gesture of prosperity set the tone for the day, infusing the atmosphere with positivity and cultural reverence.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the delightful sweets table, adorned with an array of traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year delicacies. From kokis to kavum, attendees were treated with a mouth-watering feast, indulging in the sweetness of the season.

Throughout the day, a variety of traditional games were organized, bringing laughter and excitement to all. From the hilarious ‘eating buns’ to ‘aliyata asa thabeema’ challenge, participants eagerly joined in the fun. The traditional ‘breaking pots’ game tested participants’ skill and precision, while ‘musical chairs’, ‘pillow fights’ and ‘tug of war’ brought out their competitive spirits. The ‘blindfold feeding’ and ‘balloon dance’ added a touch of whimsy and laughter to the festivities, creating unforgettable memories for everyone involved.

Amidst the games and festivities, the crowning of the Rota Wasantha Kumara and Kumariya added a touch of royalty to the event. Dakshi Wijayagunaratne was crowned as the “Rota Wasantha Kumariya”, with Pabamini Ahangama and Abhimani Lakshika as the first and second runners-up respectively. Dewmini Prabhasha was awarded the title of the Most Popular Wasantha Kumariya. Dushyantha Rathnayake took the title of the “Rota  Wasantha Kumara”, with Kusal Jayasooriya and Thanuj Abeyrathne as the first and second runners-up. Shaun Pieris was recognized as the Most Popular Wasantha Kumara.

The success of the event was made possible by the immense support of our partners. The valuable gifts provided by the generous gift partners added an extra layer of excitement to the celebration, while FM Derana’s media coverage ensured that the event reached a far and wide audience. Also, Pepsi joined as the official beverage partner, keeping everyone refreshed throughout the day.

As the day drew to a close, the energy soared with the beats of a vibrant DJ, providing the perfect soundtrack for a happening night keeping the crowd dancing and smiling until the final moments. Laughter filled the air as attendees bonded over shared experiences and cherished memories, forging new friendships and strengthening existing bonds.

As the festivities came to a close, hearts were full, and spirits were lifted. The success of the event was a result of the tireless efforts of the organizing committee, who worked diligently to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for all. Their dedication and hard work were evident in every aspect of the celebration, making it a truly special occasion for everyone involved. And thus, the Rota  Wasantha Udanaya ‘24 organized by the Club Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya was a resounding success, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate culture, tradition, and unity.
