Queen of the Silver Screen: A Tribute to Malini Fonseka

Malini Fonseka, affectionately hailed as the “Queen of Sinhala Cinema,” passed away on May 24, 2025, at the age of 78, while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo . Her passing marks the end of an era in Sri Lankan arts and culture.

Born on April 30, 1947, in Kelaniya, Malini Senehelatha Fonseka embarked on her artistic journey through theatre before transitioning to film. She made her cinematic debut in 1968 with Punchi Baba and went on to star in over 150 films, including classics like Nidhanaya, Bambaru Awith, Thushara, and Wekande Walauwa. Her performances earned her numerous accolades, such as multiple Sarasaviya Best Actress Awards and the Kala Keerthi national honour.

Beyond the silver screen, she served as a Member of Parliament from 2010 to 2015, reflecting her commitment to public service . Her contributions to cinema were internationally recognized when CNN named her among Asia’s 25 greatest film actors of all time in 2010.

Malini Fonseka’s legacy transcends her filmography, she was a beacon of grace, talent, and dedication. Her impact on Sri Lankan cinema and culture will continue to inspire generations to come.
