On every November 17th, we celebrate International Students’ Day, which is an international observance dedicated to the global student community. Who are students? Students are people who study a subject or field under a formal or structured educational system. From preschool to university, every student has to pass through multiple stages of learning. At each stage, they must overcome different challenges to achieve success. Every year brings new responsibilities, new lessons, and new obstacles that shape them for a better future.

Why do we celebrate this day on November 17th out of all the remaining days? This date was chosen to commemorate a tragic but powerful historical event that took place in Prague during World War II. On November 17, 1939, nine students were executed without trial in a Nazi concentration camp. Their courage and sacrifice remind us to always stand up for our freedom. Because of this incident, November 17th became a powerful symbol of student resistance, unity, and the fight for freedom and education.

How do students celebrate this day? Universities around the world celebrate this day in many different ways. Some students take part in gatherings on campus where they share their challenges and express their concerns to the university council. They also spend time listening to other students, supporting them, and lifting them up. Many students also participate in creative competitions, gratitude activities, and different charity events focused on helping others. Even though it has a tragic history, this day reminds us that every student has the right to study. Today, International Students’ Day encourages us to honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us and to appreciate the spirit of students and the real power of strength and resilience.
