World Day of the Sick

Sickness and illness are part of our human condition and experience but going through it in isolation and abandonment without any care or compassion can be inhumane and suffocating. Hence, this is why we as a community must recognize the importance of the “World Day of the Sick” which is observed universally on the 11th of February.

The World Day of the Sick is an awareness day in the Catholic Church intended for prayer and sharing of one’s suffering and reminding everyone to see in his sick brother or sister the face of Christ.

Looking into the history of this day, it was instituted on the 13th of May, 1992 by Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, therefore, it was significant to him that this day was made. He chose the memorial of ‘Our Lady of Lourdes’ is the day of observance as many pilgrims and visitors to Lourdes, France were reported to have been healed at the Marian Sanctuary through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. Hence, the 11th of February was chosen to annually observe and remember the “World Day of the Sick”.

Every year, this day offers a way for everyone regardless of their religious beliefs to come together and pray and take care of those who are suffering from various sicknesses. Apart from that we also remember and thank the caregivers and hospital chaplains who look after the ill.

Especially, this day is more relevant now due to the COVID pandemic we have faced, so, let us take some time to remember all the souls we have lost during the pandemic
