Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Shehal Jayasinghe

My Rotaract journey has been a whirlwind of growth, and the kind of lessons you just can’t find in a textbook. It all started because of two of my closest friends, Rtr Chamindu and Rtr Sachinda who were the Finance Co-Directors for the 24/25 term. They pulled me into the world of service, starting with Spark ’23, where I served as an Event & Logistics Coordinator.

From there, I stepped into the role of External Relations Coordinator for Project Abhiman. That project became a huge part of my life for nearly a year. Between the fundraising drives and even organizing stage dramas to raise money, I learned that Rotaract is as much about creativity and grit as it is about service. This experience gave me the momentum to step up as the Co-Chair for Project Spark ’24. It gave me the essential stepping stones I needed to navigate the complexities of managing a team and a large vision.

During the 2024/25 term, things really picked up speed when I became the Team Leader of the Finance Avenue. One of the absolute highlights was overlooking a team for Rota Tomorrow 25. It was an incredible experience traveling across the country, working alongside health industry professionals, and soaking in every moment of the Rota Tomorrow season. Walking away as the 1st Runners-up for the Most Outstanding Team Leader was a proud moment. I also took a leap as a Co-chair for the project Sangrama, a collaborative project with two other Rotaract clubs. Though we didn’t reach the finish line with that one, it was one of my greatest teachers in communication, networking, and handling the unpredictable nature of leadership and also helping the signature project of the Finance avenue the Finwave 1.0 was a core memory.

Now, in my third year, I am honored to serve as the Treasurer of the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya for the 25/26 term with a huge responsibility. I am grateful to the outgoing Treasurer, Rtr. Ravindu Abeykoon, for his guidance and for the strong foundation he built during the 24/25 term, which I am now privileged to uphold. Being on the EXCO is a surreal proud moment for me. While overlooking the very same Finance Avenue where I started as a member and worked my way through being a, chair and a team leader.

Being the Treasurer wasn’t always about preparing financial reports. It was also those late-night EXCO meetings, some of which, I’ll admit, I may have accidentally napped through. Whether I’m chasing avenue directors for their finished project reports or asking for loan repayments, these moments have built bonds I’ll cherish forever.

“Rotaract isn’t just about the titles, it’s about the impact we leave behind and the people we become along the way”. Beyond the projects and titles, the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya stood as a lifelong family, a training ground for leadership, and a platform where I learned the true meaning of service.

Viva la Rotaract!
