At a time when the world is facing conflict, division and uncertainty, a peaceful movement began with a simple idea to spread compassion through walking together. This vision gave life to the “Sama Pada Yathrawa” or “Ehipassiko Walk for Peace,” an international peace pilgrimage inspired by Buddhist teachings of mindfulness, kindness and unity.
In 2026, this meaningful journey reached Sri Lanka. It brought together monks, devotees and communities from different backgrounds with one shared purpose of peace and harmony. The pilgrimage began with religious observances in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. It then continued from Dambulla towards Colombo. Over several days, the walk passed through cities and villages before concluding at Independence Square.

Throughout the journey, sacred Buddhist relics and a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi were carried. They stood as symbols of blessings, spiritual connection and peace. However, the true strength of the Yathrawa was not only in the procession itself. It was also in the people along the way. Devotees offered flowers, water and blessings to the pilgrims. This created a calm and emotional atmosphere throughout the journey.
The purpose of the Sama Pada Yathrawa went beyond religion. It aimed to encourage kindness, mindfulness and unity among people. This was especially important at a time when the world continues to experience tension and uncertainty. The walk reminded many that peace does not begin through power or force. It begins through compassion and understanding.
More than a pilgrimage, Sama Pada Yathrawa 2026 became a reflection of Sri Lanka’s spiritual and cultural identity. It showed how thousands of people could come together without barriers. They walked side by side with one shared hope, a more peaceful world for future generations.
