Project InnerBloom

Personal well-being is deeply influenced by mental health. The hectic nature of modern society has led many people to experience conditions such as stress, depression, and anxiety. As a result, individuals often seek temporary relief through short-term solutions such as drug use, alcohol consumption, and smoking rather than focusing on healthier long-term solutions for recovery and healing. This is where InnerBloom begins its role.

InnerBloom is an initiative implemented by the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya as part of Rota Tomorrow 6.0. The project consisted of four phases, each addressing different aspects of mental health awareness and proactive substance abuse prevention.

As the first phase of the initiative, a series of skill-based awareness sessions were conducted across eight schools, reaching more than 2,500 students. The sessions highlighted the harmful effects of drug use, the importance of mental health, healthy coping strategies, and methods of recovery without turning to drugs.

The program emphasized that awareness is more powerful than prevention alone, encouraging students to make the right decisions.

The second phase of the initiative focused on the importance of equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to identify people struggling with drug addiction and to support them throughout the recovery process. As part of this phase, three Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions were conducted at two schools and within one corporate sector organization. These sessions aimed to create awareness and empower participants to provide guidance and support to individuals affected by substance abuse.

As Phase 3.1 of the project, a talent show was organized at the Senehasa Rehabilitation Centre, Piliyandala, followed by a workshop on personality development. This phase mainly focused on reducing the stigma surrounding individuals affected by drug addiction and delivering the message that everyone deserves a second chance to choose the right path in life. It also aimed to give the residents courage and hope by reminding them that society stands with them in their recovery journey.

In addition, as part of the third phase, a leaflet campaign on tobacco use was conducted on April 1st to raise public awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. Furthermore, a research article related to the project theme was also handed over to the ADIC organization to support future prevention programs.

The fourth phase of the project was a social media awareness campaign aimed at educating the general public about drug addiction and rehabilitation. As part of this phase, a YouTube interview series titled Talk Up was published on the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya YouTube channel in collaboration with experts from the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board. Along with the YouTube video series, a Facebook video series and a TikTok video series were also launched as part of the campaign.

Through these sessions, society was educated on topics such as drug addiction, the legal aspects related to drug use, and the importance of rehabilitation and recovery programs. The campaign helped spread awareness to a wider audience while also serving as a resource for future awareness programs.

As the name implies, InnerBloom was a project that encouraged individuals to rediscover themselves, heal from within, and grow into better versions of themselves. The project not only created a positive impact on the community but also helped the team behind it discover themselves, connect with new people, and unlock their own potential through the journey of service and awareness.
