Diya Saviya ’26: A Journey Towards Clean Water and Dignified Sanitation

Clean water and proper sanitation aren’t just basic needs, they are fundamental human rights. Recognizing the gaps across Sri Lanka, Team Aqua of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya launched Diya Saviya ’26. This four-phase initiative was designed to achieve Sustainable Development Goals while ensuring access to clean water and sanitation.

Phase 1: Awareness Session, S.Cr Blood Testing, Water Quality Testing (Polonnaruwa)

The journey began at Atharagallawa Temple, Bakamuna, Polonnaruwa, an area heavily affected by untreated groundwater. The team didn’t just talk about change; they brought tools. They hosted an awareness session focusing on the importance of clean water, conducted by sponsors Aqua Pro. They tested residents’ water samples on-site and conducted S.Cr blood testing to identify kidney-related health issues, contributing to improved community health awareness and well-being.

All this was made possible through the generous support of partners such as Aqua Pro, Suwa Setha, Royal Lanka Institute, D&J Printers, Sampath Traders, and the Atharagallawa Farmers’ Society.

Phase 2: Adult Diaper Donation, Two New Water Filter Installations (Kirindawala)

Next, the team visited the Liyanage Surakum Piyasa Orphanage. They provided two water filters, sponsored by Homies Company, and distributed adult diapers, sponsored by Union Chemist, for residents with special medical needs. Shutter House Pvt Ltd partnered with the team to provide photography coverage.

Phase 3: Construction of Two Washrooms, Awareness Session on Clean Water (Negombo)

Poor sanitation can severely disrupt a child’s education. To tackle this, Phase 3 focused on Dalupotha Maha Vidyalaya in Negombo, where the team constructed two brand-new washrooms, fully funded by “FLI Sathkara” alongside a workshop focused on clean water. A personal donation from Samarasinghe Studio & Lab supported the printing of tokens of appreciation.

Phase 4: New Washroom Construction (Gampola)

Phase 4 expanded this impact to Nayapana Maha Vidyalaya in Gampola, where another washroom was constructed with the support of generous donors such as Wheel Masters, Dilsham Thathsara Photography, and several personal contributions.

A Shared Victory

The incredible success of Diya Saviya ’26 relied entirely on collaboration. From local corporate sponsors to healthcare professionals and dedicated Rotaractors, it was a true team effort. The project’s inspiring message also reached nationwide audiences, featured in live broadcasts on Kothmale FM, Neth FM, and Sri Lanka Rupavahini TV’s “Aluth Dinak” program.

Ultimately, Diya Saviya ’26 achieved far more than building infrastructure and distributing filters. By bridging the gap between awareness and real-world action, the project has left a lasting legacy of health, dignity, and hope for generations to come.
