Sometimes, the greatest abilities are not absent; they are simply unseen. Across Sri Lanka, many persons with disabilities continue to live unnoticed by society, while their creativity and potential flourish within homes, schools, and communities.
Project සුආර්ථ: Turning Ability into Opportunity was initiated to bring these hidden talents into the light. The project was organized by Team Pioneers of Rota Tomorrow 6.0 of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya and aimed to empower persons with disabilities by giving them opportunities to express their talents through creativity, recognition, and inclusion. The project was implemented in Panadura, Wattala, Galle, and Kandy and included children, youth, and adults with disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy.
Phase 01:
Raised awareness and empathy through the short film අවර්ණ, reflecting the true emotions, struggles, and talents of individuals with disabilities. A creative magazine was also created to give them a platform to share their unheard stories, experiences, and artistic expressions.

Phase 02:
Focused on development and creative exposure. A “Creative Corner” was set up at the Prithipura community, a pot-painting and planting workshop at Diri Daru Piyasa, and a motivational session in the සුවශක්ති community in Galle, encouraging creativity and financial independence. A mini talent show and art exhibition were also held at Navodaya Special Education Residential Boys’ School in Kandy, where children confidently showcased their talents through music, dance, and art, strengthening confidence and inclusion.
Phase 03:
Participants proudly and confidently displayed their talents with joy at the grand talent show at Diri Daru Piyasa. It was not simply a platform for performance but a celebration of inclusion, dignity, and humanity. This occasion also marked the official launch of the සුආර්ථ magazine, followed by the release of its e-magazine version.
Phase 04:
Addressed a practical need through the donation of Pooja dance costume materials to persons with disabilities. This initiative enabled them to confidently participate in cultural performances.

Phase 05:
A sustainable digital platform was launched through the සුආර්ථ website, ensuring the long-term impact of the initiative and allowing their voices and abilities to reach a wider audience.
Ultimately, Project සුආර්ථ was far more than a community project. It was a powerful reminder that talent, creativity, and ambition are not limited by disability. When society opens the door to ability, inclusion, and opportunity, extraordinary things happen.
