The Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya proudly launched EvolveX 2.0, a large-scale esports, gaming, and game development initiative under the Sports & Recreational Activities Avenue in collaboration with the Information & Technology Avenue. Designed to bridge the gap between passion and profession, the project aimed to educate, inspire, and empower Sri Lankan youth by showcasing the vast opportunities available within the rapidly growing gaming and esports industry.
As gaming continues to evolve into a global career pathway, EvolveX 2.0 sought to transform common perceptions of gaming from a recreational activity into a platform for education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional growth. Through industry partnerships, expert-led discussions, networking opportunities, and competitive gaming experiences, the project successfully engaged students, gamers, developers, and technology enthusiasts from across the country.

The initiative was implemented through three key phases. The first phase, the Game Development Session, introduced participants to the technical and creative aspects of game creation. Industry experts from leading organizations such as RAM Studios, Mogo Games, Heladev Lanka Holdings, and the Ceylon School of Game Design shared valuable insights on game programming, Unity development, creative design processes, content creation, streaming, entrepreneurship, and career opportunities within the gaming sector. Interactive panel discussions provided participants with firsthand knowledge about industry trends, challenges, and future opportunities while inspiring them to pursue careers in digital entertainment and game development.
The second phase, the Gaming and Esports Conference, served as a professional platform that brought together students, gamers, developers, esports enthusiasts, and industry professionals. The conference featured engaging panel discussions, audience interaction sessions, networking opportunities, and educational presentations focusing on esports growth, gaming culture, content creation, marketing, and community building. Participants gained a deeper understanding of responsible gaming, leadership, innovation, and teamwork while building valuable connections with professionals in the industry.
The final phase, the Gaming Competition, created a dynamic esports environment that encouraged teamwork, strategic thinking, leadership, and sportsmanship. Gaming teams representing different communities and universities competed through preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and championship matches in a highly organized tournament setting. The competition concluded with an exciting prize-giving ceremony, celebrating the achievements of the participating teams. Team Imax emerged as the champions, followed by Team Awlakna as first runners-up and Team Monzter securing third place.
Beyond the event activities, EvolveX 2.0 also focused heavily on youth development and community engagement. Through extensive awareness campaigns, social media promotions, educational content, and interactive digital engagement, the project successfully increased public awareness about esports, gaming careers, game development, and digital entrepreneurship. The initiative provided a valuable learning experience for participants while enhancing leadership, communication, event management, and teamwork skills among the organizing committee members.
The project was made possible through the support of strategic partners, including RAM Studios, Mogo Games, Heladev Lanka Holdings Pvt Ltd, Smart Print Solution Pvt Ltd, the Computer Science Students’ Association of the University of Kelaniya, and several gaming content creators and media partners. Their contributions strengthened the project’s impact and provided participants with direct access to industry expertise and professional networks.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), EvolveX 2.0 successfully demonstrated how gaming and technology can be leveraged as tools for education, innovation, and youth empowerment.
Overall, EvolveX 2.0 stands as a pioneering initiative that successfully connected education, technology, esports, and community development. By creating opportunities for learning, networking, innovation, and competition, the project inspired young individuals to explore the limitless possibilities within the gaming industry while contributing to the growth of Sri Lanka’s digital entertainment ecosystem. Its success has laid a strong foundation for future esports and technology-focused initiatives, ensuring a lasting impact on both participants and the broader gaming community.
