Kelani Handawa ’26 : Celebration of Music, Friendship, and Perseverance

What began as a simple idea soon transformed into one of the most memorable nights in the university calendar. Kelani Handawa ’26 was not merely a musical event, it was the result of months of dedication, sacrifice, friendship, and teamwork. From the moment the Organizing Committee was formed, members came together with a shared vision of creating an unforgettable experience for the undergraduate community of the University of Kelaniya. As weeks passed, the committee evolved into more than a working team. Strong friendships were formed, countless memories were created, and a sense of unity developed among members that became the driving force behind the project.

The journey towards Kelani Handawa was filled with both excitement and challenges. The committee actively engaged in fundraising initiatives, conducting bookmark sales at various locations and organizing a fundraising stall at Rota Wasantha Udanaya. Every contribution, whether large or small, brought the project one step closer to reality. Through the commitment and networking efforts of the Organizing Committee, several valuable partnerships were secured, including support from Ceylon Marine Services Holdings (PLC) Limited, HEGA, FEN, Sitrek, PickMe, Ever After Frame, and Plan Smart Media. These partnerships strengthened the project and reflected the confidence that external organizations placed in the vision of Kelani Handawa.

During the planning phase, the country faced a fuel crisis, and university lectures were shifted online. What could have become a major obstacle instead became a test of the committee’s resilience. Members adapted to the circumstances, continuing their fundraising activities through district wise initiatives while maintaining constant communication and coordination. Despite the difficulties, the determination of the team never wavered. Every challenge strengthened the committee’s commitment to delivering an exceptional event.

When the much-awaited day finally arrived, the Cyber Open Air Theatre was transformed into a vibrant celebration of music and youth. Long before the audience arrived, Organizing Committee members were already on site, attending to final preparations and ensuring every detail was in place. As the evening progressed, hundreds of undergraduates filled the venue, creating an atmosphere unlike any other. The overwhelming crowd stood as a testament to the months of hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by the committee.

The stage came alive with spectacular performances by Suneera Sumanga, Pamith Mandiv, Jo Perera, and Ramidu Yashmintha together with the Chorus Band. The energy of the audience, the glow of the lights, and the echoes of music across the open-air theatre created a truly magical atmosphere. Every cheer, every song sung in unison, and every smiling face reflected the success of the event and the impact it had on the university community.

Following the successful conclusion of Kelani Handawa ’26, the President expressed sincere appreciation to every member of the Organizing Committee, Directors of Club Service Avenue and team leaders for their unwavering dedication and contribution. Looking back, Kelani Handawa was far more than a musical night. It was a celebration of friendship, perseverance, teamwork, and the vibrant spirit of university life. It brought together hundreds of undergraduates under one sky, created memories that will last a lifetime, and left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of Rotaractors.
