World Suicide Prevention Day

Every year, on the 10th of September, the world observes World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a day that reminds us of an issue that is often difficult to talk about but cannot be ignored. Suicide is not simply a personal problem. It is a serious social and mental health issue that affects individuals, families, friends and entire communities.

There are times when things seem too hard, and a person cannot cope with everything on their own. Problems at school or university, parent or family issues, financial worries, social problems, loneliness, bullying or abuse can drive someone to attempt suicide or self-harm. One must understand that a person can be unhappy and traumatized inside despite a calm facial expression. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to a person and try to understand what they are talking about. If you have ever felt that your life is not worth living, remember that there is always hope.

The main challenge in dealing with suicide is the stigma that clings to it. People who decide to take their own life are often judged, stigmatized and humiliated. Suicide attempts or thoughts are taboo in many societies, which makes people suffering in silence and not asking for help. We must strive to change the situation and encourage people to voice their problems. Sometimes, helping a person can be as simple as calling them on the phone or paying attention to them. A psychological state can be improved if a person feels that someone is ready to listen and support. Therefore, in a friendly manner, ask people nearby if they are okay. It doesn’t mean that you have to fix everything right away. Sometimes, people need to vent their trouble and grief.

Moreover, to prevent such situations, it is necessary to educate people about the importance of psychological health and teach them what to do in case of problems. Representatives of the school, college or university, business community or government can spread awareness about suicide and ways to deal with it. The role of educators, psychologists, doctors and ordinary people is to help those who are suffering and emphasize that consulting a specialist is not a shameful act.

So, in the World Suicide Prevention Day, we extend our hands to those who are in need and remind people that their lives are precious. There are always reasons to live. Every situation is favorable for changing for the better. We cannot predict what will happen in an hour, a day or a month, but we can control our actions and deeds. We do not know what people are struggling with, so we should treat them with more understanding and compassion. A caring word or deed will never be superfluous or untimely.

So let’s remember people who have decided to take their own lives in silence without asking for help. On this day, we should especially show mercy and support to those who have recently had traumatic experiences and are now looking for a way out of despair. Remember that sometimes the most critical help can be expressed in a friendly smile. But above all, the thing that matters the most is, simply being there.
