Every dream begins somewhere, and for many of us, that beginning is a classroom filled with lessons, questions, encouragement and hope. This is why teachers are not simply educators, they are the people who help shape the future.
While World Teachers’ Day is celebrated globally on October 5th, Sri Lanka celebrates Teachers’ Day on October 6th, giving us an opportunity to pause and recognize the dedication of those who spend their lives educating and inspiring others. It is a reminder of the powerful role teachers play in our lives. Behind many successful people is a teacher who believed in them, encouraged them or helped them discover something within themselves. Sometimes, a teacher becomes the first person outside our families to tell us that we are capable of more than we think.

A teacher’s influence does not end with textbooks and examinations. They teach us to think, question, create and dream. They encourage us when we are afraid of failure and remind us that making mistakes is simply a part of learning. Sometimes, a teacher may never realize how much a few simple words can mean to a student. They show us how to face challenges, accept our mistakes and respect the people around us. Teachers also remind us that education is not only about getting good grades but also about becoming a better human being.
Behind every lesson is an effort that students may not always notice. Teachers spend hours preparing lessons, checking work, planning activities and finding new ways to help students understand. They listen when we are struggling, celebrate our achievements and patiently explain things again when we still do not understand. Teaching asks for knowledge but it also asks for patience, compassion and a heart that genuinely cares and perhaps that is what makes teachers so special.

Years from now, we may not remember every rule, definition or page we studied. But we may remember the teacher who stayed after class to help us, the teacher who made us laugh on a difficult day or the teacher who believed in us when we had stopped believing in ourselves. Teachers do not simply teach us how to find answers. They help us believe that we are capable of finding our own. And maybe that is why true change begins in the classroom, not with a great achievement but with one teacher, one student and one small moment of belief.
That is the magic of teaching.
So, on this Teachers’ Day, let us say more than just “Happy Teachers’ Day.” Let us say “Thank you” for the patience we sometimes tested, for the second chances we were given, for the words that encouraged us and for the lessons that quietly became part of who we are.
Happy Teachers’ Day!
