History in the making!

The year 2020 taught us many different things, learning how to adapt in the face of an unforeseen pandemic topping the list. But 2020 also found new reasoning to celebrate which was the appointment of the first female and first woman of colour for the post of the Vice President of the United States of America. That honour was bestowed upon Kamala Harris!

This milestone is important because it shows the power of courage and resilience to fight a system that has a history of impediments that stem from inequality.

In her victory speech, she managed to inspire every single female who stood patiently listening to their first female VP.

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,

“Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”

The election of Kamala Harris as the first Vice President inspires millions of other females of the possibility for more. It nurtures the inner feeling that any feat is within reach and definitely achievable.

There are many affiliations to Kamala Harris, her parents are both Immigrants, her mother an Indian and her father a Jamaican. She faced difficulties at an age as early as 5 when her parents decided to file a divorce. After which, she was primarily under the care of her single mother. But she managed to turn those difficulties into results that matter.

Kamala Harris first gained experience as a Bay Area prosecutor in Alameda and San Francisco counties, after which she rose into political fame as the first woman of colour to be elected San Francisco district attorney, and then state attorney general. In 2016, she became the second Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

The possibility of a female from a diverse family and strong multicultural roots reaching the white house is one of the extraordinary triumphs to ever occur to date. Her election to the vice presidency is a major milestone in the story of women’s evolving role in American politics as well as in our nation’s history.

Kamala Harris’s ascension to the White House is a reminder that no dream is too little or too small. It broadens the horizons of what can be achieved within the realms of politics and extends into education, infrastructure.

There have been 48 Vice Presidents of USA and when you see the inauguration of the 49th, I hope it invokes the feeling of representation and a sense of belonging.

The next time you find yourself contemplating any decision, trust your strengths and engage with your best foot forward!
