During the Rota Tomorrow 6.0 initiative of the Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya, Team 04 – “Ceylonify” carried out a project named “Beyond the Pearl” to promote Sri Lanka’s tourism industry through media visibility. Throughout this project, we focused on showcasing the real beauty of Sri Lanka, not only through famous destinations but also through its culture, traditions, industries, and people.
Our project was carried out in three main phases. The first phase, “Chronicles Beyond the Pearl,” mainly focused on social media promotion through Instagram and Facebook. Since many travelers and tourists use Instagram to discover new places, we used it as our main platform to share content and reach a wider audience. As part of this phase, we visited several tourist attractions and interacted with foreign tourists to hear about their experiences in Sri Lanka. These interviews were later shared on our social media pages. We also visited traditional industries such as mask-making, cane products, handloom, and wood-carving industries to create awareness about Sri Lankan craftsmanship and cultural heritage. In addition, we designed thematic posts related to festivals, hidden places, traditions, and national attractions, while also engaging with local sellers and small business owners to highlight the people behind Sri Lankan products.

The second phase of the project focused on creating a digital tourism magazine titled “Untold Stories of the Pearl”. Through this magazine, we aimed to present authentic travel experiences and cultural stories about Sri Lanka. We received articles and contributions from several individuals, including Sishtimitra, MM Ahmad, and Chef Gokulanan. The magazine also included photographs captured by wildlife photographer Pasindu Lakshan, which added more value and authenticity to the publication.
The final phase of our project was the Cultural Exhibition held at Galle Fort on the 4th of April. Nearly 20 local vendors representing traditional Sri Lankan industries participated in the exhibition. Tourists were able to experience Sri Lankan culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship firsthand, making the event both interactive and memorable.
Overall, Beyond the Pearl became a valuable experience for our team, allowing us to promote Sri Lanka’s tourism and cultural identity in a meaningful and creative way.
