International Day of Democracy

Let’s solemnize the International Day of Democracy, the day to assess autonomy and equality for all individuals around the world.

The term “Democracy” is derived from the two Greek words “Demos” – people and “Kratos” – power. Ultimately it means the Power of People. In the General context, Democracy is a model of government that operates with the power of the people of a particular country. 

Democracy is one of the core values of the United Nations promoted by human rights, development, and peace and security. Even though the United Nations Charter did not specifically mention the word democracy, “We the People of the United Nations”, the introductory words of the Charter, show the main principle of democracy that is the foundation of the legitimacy of the sovereign states is the will of the people. This is also included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 19 of the Declaration contains the fundamental right of freedom of expression. Everyone has a right to express their opinion through any media irrespective of any intrusion and boundaries.

The initial celebration of the International Day of Democracy occurred on 15th September 2008 with various governmental events held around the world.The preliminary step for this was taken through the resolution with the title “Support by United Nations system of efforts of governments to promote and consolidate a new or restored democracy” promoted by Qatar and passed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007.

“Empowering the Next Generations”, the Democracy Day theme of 2023, highlights the importance of the contribution of children and youngsters to democracy by encouraging them to raise their voices in the decisions made concerning the future as they are the protagonists of today and future democracy.
