Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Chenuri Edirisuriya

It is often said that in order to turn a stone into a diamond, it must go through constant polishing and pressure. In the same way, when I first came to university, I saw myself as an unpolished stone, fearful, shy, and unsure, with very few friends. However, I knew I wanted to break out of my comfort zone and try something new. That decision led me to join Rotaract, and it has been one of the best decisions of my university life.

I began my Rotaract journey as the ER Coordinator of Project Herawuma under Rota Tomorrow 4.0. That experience marked the beginning of my transformation. Slowly but surely, I overcame my fear of speaking to people, appearing in videos, and meeting new individuals. It was a turning point that helped me build confidence in myself.

I then continued as an ER Coordinator for Project We Care under IS Avenue, further strengthening my communication skills and exposure. However, a major turning point in my journey was when I became a Team Leader under PR Avenue. In this role, I led Project Rota Brain Tease, where we created content for special days. This project became one of my favorites, as it allowed me to explore different cultures, connect with new people, and truly enjoy the process. Leading a team while maintaining a fun and collaborative environment helped me grow immensely as a leader.

Another significant milestone in my journey was chairing Project Writing Maze, my first experience leading a project. Conducted under Editorial Avenue, this initiative brought together 8 Rotaract Clubs and 2 Interact Clubs to publish a short story collection. It was a truly meaningful experience that showed creativity, collaboration, and the power of storytelling. The project went on to receive remarkable recognition, winning the Most Outstanding Club Service Project at the TURF Awards by SEARIC, as well as the Most Innovative Club Service Initiative at the 35th Rotaract District Assembly. This achievement remains one of the proudest moments of my Rotaract journey.

In addition, I served as the Secretary for Project Ekhos of Ceylon, a tourism-focused initiative where we created content highlighting hidden treasures in Sri Lanka. This experience further enhanced my organizational and teamwork skills.

My fourth year brought the biggest challenge and milestone of my Rotaract journey when I was appointed as the Director of the Professional Development Avenue. This role came with significant responsibility and accountability, pushing me to grow both personally and professionally. Among the projects I led, the most remarkable was Project Mister and Miss University, an island-wide beauty pageant organized by a university for the very first time. From conducting research to connecting with industry professionals and organizing a large-scale event, this project tested us in every possible way. Despite the challenges, it remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to contribute to the Annual Career Fair of the University of Kelaniya and an Entrepreneurship Project under PD Avenue. Each of these experiences added a new layer to my journey, shaping my skills in leadership, decision-making, and resilience.

Looking back, every project, every challenge, every success, and every failure has contributed to who I am today. Rotaract has taught me how to overcome struggles, face challenges with confidence, and embrace growth. Most importantly, it has given me unforgettable memories and lifelong connections.

Today, I can proudly say that Rotaract has transformed me from an unpolished stone into a polished diamond and for that, I am forever grateful.
