Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Sayuri Bandara

When I joined the Rotaract Club Rotaract, I had a simple goal to make good friends, travel, and make the most of my university life. Little did I know that this single decision would become one of the most meaningful and life-changing chapters of my journey.

My Rotaract journey began with Swabhasamudra 2.0, where I joined as the Project Secretary. At first, I assumed my role would revolve around documentation and minutes. However, Rotaract quickly taught me that every member has the opportunity to contribute beyond their title.

As the project progressed, I found myself supporting different teams, learning new skills, taking on responsibilities, and enjoying every moment of the journey. Later, I was entrusted with the role of Chairperson, allowing me to contribute even more to a project that had already become so close to my heart.

What made Swabhasamudra truly special was not just the project itself, it was the people.

A heartfelt thank you to my co-chairpersons, Senura and Rukshila, who stood beside me throughout the journey. Through Swabhasamudra, I was fortunate to build lifelong friendships with Sasith, Pahan, Eranda, and many others. Although I cannot mention every name, each of you has left an unforgettable mark on my life and will always hold a special place in my heart.

And the, I had the privilege of joining Ignite Sri Lanka, another project that shaped me in many ways.

Following Swabhasamudra 2.0, I joined Ignite Sri Lanka, where I discovered the true essence of community service. Attending the Ignite Sri Lanka 1.0 Opening Ceremony and concluding the project with a memorable two-day visit to Giribawa Village were experiences I will always cherish. Later, participating in the Ignite Sri Lanka 2.0 research visits gave me another opportunity to connect with communities, learn from their stories, and contribute in meaningful ways. These experiences remain some of the most valuable and unforgettable memories of my university life.

Following these experiences, I was appointed as the Team Leader of the Community Service Avenue.

This role taught me one of the greatest lessons of my Rotaract journey that leadership is never about titles. It is about supporting others, trusting your team, and growing together through every challenge.

I am incredibly grateful to Dinithi, Dilini, and Chamodi for their dedication, friendship, and unwavering support throughout this chapter. To every member of our Community Service family, thank you for making every meeting, every project, and every challenge feel worthwhile. You transformed an avenue into a family, and those memories will stay with me forever.

Rotaract also encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone.

I joined EKCOS of Ceylon, organized by the International Service Avenue, as a Project Coordinator. Working alongside Himas, Lihini, Pruthivi, Anuji, Chamodya, Sachula, and the entire team gave me another beautiful experience and unforgettable memories, especially our trip to Kandalama.

Around the same time, I became part of the Rota Tommorow Project as a member of Team 07. Together, we worked towards creating meaningful impact while building friendships that extended beyond the project itself.

A special thank you to Kaushika and Vandana for all the wonderful memories we shared throughout this RT journey.

As my second year in RACUOK began, I had the honour of serving as a Board of Directors member. It marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with greater responsibilities, new challenges, and stronger friendships.

One memory that will always stay close to my heart is our Board Trip to Kitulgala. It was much more than a trip it strengthened the bond among every Board member. Those adventures, conversations, laughter, and shared moments reminded me that behind every successful project is a team that genuinely cares for one another.

As the 2024–25 Rotaract year came to an end, I looked back with immense gratitude.

I sincerely thank our Vice President Pabamini, and Directors Darshi Akka, Dinanga, and Ravindu, whose trust, guidance, and encouragement prepared me for the next chapter of my journey.

Those experiences led me to one of the proudest moments of my Rotaract life being appointed as the Director of the Environmental Service Avenue for the 2025–26 term.

It was a completely new avenue and a completely new challenge, but one I embraced with excitement and determination.

Together with my incredible Co-Director Dilini, under the constant guidance of our Vice President Pahan, we successfully carried out two initiatives that I will always be proud of Swabhasamudra 3.0, expanded to a much greater scale than before, and Harithaswara 1.0.

Watching these initiatives come to life remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my Rotaract journey.

This year introduced me to another amazing family. From our very first memories together during the Jaffna Trip to the unforgettable moments we shared in Kosgoda, every meeting, every project, every late-night discussion, and every celebration became another beautiful memory.

A special thank you goes to my Environmental Service Team Leaders Kemil, Imashi, Dinithi, and Thiviru. Your dedication, creativity, and hard work became the driving force behind every initiative we carried out together.

To all my beloved ES family my “little ES babies” thank you for filling this journey with laughter, happiness, and unforgettable memories. Although I cannot mention every name individually, every one of you has a permanent place in my heart.

I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to VP Pahan, who was always there whenever challenges arose. No matter how difficult the situation seemed, he never failed to guide us with patience, wisdom, and encouragement. And to Dilini, thank you for being more than a Co-Director. Thank you for being an incredible friend and partner throughout this journey. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better teammate.

Looking back today, I realize that Rotaract gave me so much more than positions and responsibilities. It gave me confidence. It taught me leadership. It taught me teamwork. It taught me resilience. It showed me the true meaning of service. Most importantly, it gave me a family.

The friendships I built, the places we travelled, the projects we completed, the challenges we overcame, and the countless memories we created have shaped me into the person I am today.

The person who joined RACUOK hoping to make friends and travel found exactly that but also discovered purpose, lifelong friendships, unforgettable experiences, and a second home.

As one chapter comes to an end, another begins.

Although my official journey in RACUOK has come to a close, the friendships, lessons, and memories will remain with me forever. Every person who walked alongside me has left a mark on my life, and for that, I will always be grateful.

To every Rotaractor who shared this incredible journey with me thank you for believing in me, supporting me, inspiring me, and making these years the most beautiful chapter of my university life.

I wish each of you the very best in your own Rotaract journey. Continue to serve with passion, lead with humility, and create memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Once a Rotaractor, always a Rotaractor.

Thank you, RACUOK, for giving me a journey that I will cherish forever.
