Crafting Visual Stories
“Cinematography is a writing with images in movements and with sounds.”

The images captured by a camera are dumb until the combination of vivid images is set into an artistic pattern where a story is woven, arousing a plethora of feelings and emotions in the audience. The art of visual storytelling is beyond the focus of abnormal images. A well-fabricated story runs on the screen guided by the multiple brushes of cinematographic elements of a cinematographer.
The history of cinematography dates back to the 19th century, pinpointing several milestones. In 1895, the machine “Cinematographe” to capture and show moving images was developed by the Lumiere brothers. The innovation of this machine is considered the origin of cinema today. However, with the advent of technology, the camera has been improved with novel features as the prominent equipment in filmmaking.
Let’s delve into the elements that contribute to crafting an attractive visual story.

Lighting
The usage and adjustment of lights suitable to each scenario convey the mood of the characters. For instance, the dim lights denote the dullness of the ongoing incident. Moreover, it defines for the audience the thematical changes of the plot.
Composition
The arrangement of each scenario preserves the flow of the story. Perhaps it conveys joy, confusion, and grief, and sometimes the sudden ambiguity can be turned into surprise. In a nutshell, here, the various setups are discussed visually.
Movement

This is another element of a visual story in which the enthusiasm of the audience is grabbed. Energy and liveliness are added according to the situation that comes to the frame. Further, slow motion, fast motion, time lapses, and reverse motion are applied as techniques.
Emotion
The most alluring element that a cinematographer attempts to attack through his artwork is the fragile part of each spectator’s emotions. A flood of emotions can be disturbed as the captured view is deeply touched by the spectator’s mindset, taking them away from the usual world for a few minutes.
Apart from the above elements, camera angle, camera movements, filters, lens, and film stock are also crucial techniques in filmmaking. The creation of a cinematic eye cannot simply be produced since it is a quite complex process, mainly focusing on even the trivial factors that immensely impact the whole artwork.
Storytelling through the lens is a striking form of speaking to the soul!
