World Consumer Rights Day

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a king or a queen?

Unless for a handful of people such as Charles III, and Hamad bin Isa bin Al Khalifa, a throne is a distant dream for most people.

Yet, “Customer is the king” is a famous slogan in consumerist societies that says that even we can become kings at a certain point in our lives.

But being king does not mean that all your rights are secured. Thus, we have the 15th of March as the World Consumer Rights Day to ensure the protection of every consumer’s right. This day was inspired by American President John F Kennedy, who sent a special message to the US Congress on the 15th of March 1962, formally addressing the issue of consumer rights. The first-ever celebrations of the day happened in 1983 and are now celebrated worldwide annually. This international day aims to celebrate the solidarity of the international consumer movement and protest against the market abuses and social injustices that undermine consumer rights.

The day is annually celebrated under themes, and 2023’s theme is “Empowering consumers through clean energy transitions”. This is in support of “COP 27”, the world’s largest annual climate action gathering, which focuses on the energy and food crisis aroused by extreme weather conditions. Accordingly, this year’s theme emphasizes the need for a just energy transition for consumers and motivates consumers to take action without being passive bystanders in this consumer crisis of energy.

Thus, let’s become informed consumers and protect the world from most of its agonies while ensuring our rights as consumers.
