“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”

Nenasa is the signature Community Services project by The Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya. Just like the word says, Nenasa is about empowering knowledge in a clear perception. Last year’s project was about supporting the educational needs with a prize giving. This year’s event came out in a more advanced manner.

Every child is a skillful artist. Some children are given essentials to have a artistic future while some are left with options to bury their creativity. As The Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya we understood the significance of a child’s imagination and made this our first phase concerning handicrafts ; Kelani Athkam.

Nenasa phase 01 consist of two main sessions. 1st session was held at Kelaniya Maha Vidyalaya on 30th of June. We’ve had a workshop on handicrafts for the students of grades 9 and 10. They are super talented but needed a proper guidance on what they are already capable of.

Unlike the students in privileged schools, students in provincial schools face problems since they are financially challenged. Our aim was to make them realize how they can become a helping hand for their families by using their talents.

On 4th of July we collected handicrafts to finalize judgments. The next level creativity of contestants left a quandary on our hands.

2nd session was the big day where we crowned up the best out of best. The exhibition and award ceremony was held at the auditorium of Kelaniya Maha Vidyalaya on 7th of July. Dr. (Mrs) Prashanthi Narangoda and Mr. Nimal Ranjith were the chief guests for the day. Mr. U.D. Waragoda ; school’s principal became a great mentor for us by giving a sensational speech.

We could see the excitement and the winning spirit of  young souls while announcing the winners. Our aim for the 2nd session was to make them feel valued in the society for what they are by adding a difference to their sterotyped school life. We believe that our aim was a success since they shared their ideas with us in a friendly manner.

At the end of the day, it’s about small things you can do to make others happy and motivated. One doesn’t have to be a university student or a Rotaractor to serve fellow men. All you need is a group of people with the desire to help others. Nenasa does not end here. A phase of a whole new dimension awaits!
