The prize giving of Wadduwa Balika Vidyalaya in Kalutara was held on 13th March at the school main hall. Abises 2018 is one of the many community services projects launched by the Rotaract club of University of Kelaniya aiming for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. This year’s prize giving was done under the theme of “Penasara Hetakata Harasara” and aimed for supporting the students from an under-privileged school.
The prizes were awarded for students of all the grades; one to eleven, and the term test results, GCE (Ordinary Level) Examination results as well as the achievements in co-curricular activities in year 2017 were taken into consideration. Thus, there were prizes including subject prizes, prizes for first place holders in classes, best attendance prize, proficiency level prizes for students who scored over 75% for subjects, prizes for best results in GCE (Ordinary Level) Examination, prizes for winners of provincial level competitions in sports and aesthetic subjects as well as prizes for the members of the school western band and the members of the prefects’ guild. Furthermore, prizes were also given for the members of the academic staff and the non-academic staff in appreciation of their services.
The most significant moment of the event was the awarding of the trophy for the Best All Rounder appreciating one student who has shown colours in academics as well as in co-curricular activities. Best All Rounder was selected by the project chairs out of the students of grades ten and eleven. After considering the educational qualifications, co-curricular activities, participation and winning of competitions outside school, intelligence quotient and general knowledge and personality of more than fifty students, the award was given to Ruvisha Rangana Fernando of grade ten.
The awarding of prizes hoped to appreciate the talents and skills of children as well as to encourage them to perform their best in future, in both academic and co-curricular fields. All the winners were given gifts and a certificate signed by the principal. Prizes and trophies were presented by the President and the joint Secretary of the club.
The project was immensely appreciated by the principal of Wadduwa Balika Vidyalaya and the parents of the prize winners who were present at the event. Abises 2018 was chaired by the Community Services Directors of the club, Rtr. Hasanthi Premathilaka and Rtr. Hirodya Hasarangi.
