Rotaract Journey of Rtr. Kusal Jayasooriya

It all started unexpectedly. I wasn’t even a Rotaractor back then. My girlfriend was actively involved in Rotaract and happened to be hosting the installation ceremony in 2023. The day before the event, she was rehearsing, and naturally, I went along to help. I didn’t know exactly what I was getting into—I was just there for her. But as I began helping out with logistics and supporting the organizing committee, I found myself slowly stepping into the world of Rotaract.

That same evening, amidst all the chaos and energy, I met Rtr. Gangadharan, the Director of Club Service. I didn’t know it then, but that meeting was the spark that lit my interest in Rotaract. It wasn’t planned. It just happened—organically, naturally, and with purpose.

Not long after, my girlfriend became the ER Coordinator for the Deepavali project. Once again, I was by her side, and somehow, I ended up coordinating the dancing activity. We traveled to Kandy, performed, and I found myself truly enjoying what I was doing. It might have seemed like a small task, but it was a turning point. That experience boosted my confidence in ways I never expected.

Then came Rtr. Vihanga Divyanjana. He invited me to join the Research OC of Ignite Sri Lanka 1.0—a project that changed my perspective on life. At the same time, I was officially appointed as the Co-chair of Christenzal 2023, which was my first official Rotaract role. That project transformed me. It was the first time our club hosted a Christmas event outside university premises—and I was the one who initiated it. With a passionate and committed team, we elevated the standards of what a Christmas party could be. It was more than just an event; it was a statement, and it laid the foundation for my journey.

Ignite Sri Lanka was another milestone. I had always dreamed of doing something meaningful for my community, and this was the perfect opportunity. As the team coordinator of the Economic and Entrepreneurship section, I was deeply involved in reviving the Palmyrah industry in Giribawa. It was fulfilling to see unemployed women gain stable income and access to markets for their products. We even traveled to Jaffna, visited the Palmyrah Board, and created memories I’ll never forget.

One memory stands out: the leadership camp. Just a day before the event, our confirmed resource person canceled. In a rush, we found someone else—but they were late. With no choice, I took the mic and conducted some leadership games with them. At first, I was nervous. But as I spoke to those young students, and shared ideas, I felt a new version of myself emerge—more confident, more capable.

My first year in Rotaract was full of learning, laughter, and growth. From community cleanups at Adam’s Peak to university initiatives, it was a year I’ll always cherish.

Then, just like that, the second year began. I was selected as the Team Leader of the Professional Development Avenue, where I initiated a technology-based project focused on Power BI. We worked with university and school students, sharing knowledge, building bridges, and empowering others.

From team leader, I was entrusted with the role of Director of Professional Development for 2024–2025. The biggest challenge I faced was launching Abhiman 2024—a massive-scale project with a budget exceeding 10 lakhs. It involved collaborating with celebrities, influencers, and external partners. At times, I doubted myself. But the commitment I made to my team—and their belief in me—pushed me forward. Together, we did something extraordinary.

Abhiman 2024 wasn’t just an event. It was a groundbreaking moment—the first time a university organized a national-level awarding ceremony for public figures. Naturally, it came with its fair share of controversy, challenges, and criticism. But we faced them all, stood our ground, and delivered a successful, impactful project. Abhiman taught me about stress management, time management, and human management—lessons I carry with me every day.

Following that, we launched Career Fair 2025. With over 2,000 interviews conducted and numerous success stories, it was another milestone that validated our hard work and vision.

Looking back, my Rotaract journey feels surreal—from accidentally helping out at a rehearsal to leading some of the most iconic projects in our club’s recent history. None of it would’ve been possible without the people who stood by me.

To my parents—thank you for giving me the freedom to chase my passions. To Pabamini, for motivating me to strike a balance between academics and extracurriculars. To Shahmi, our VP, for the unwavering support. And of course, to Rtr. Vihanga Divyanjana, our President, and Adeesha Abeydeera, our Secretary—your guidance shaped my journey in more ways than you’ll ever know.

Rotaract gave me more than just positions and titles. It gave me purpose .
