Signs of Sparkles: Rebuilding Lives Through Education

Rebuilding lives through education is one of the best ways to recover from a natural disaster. In many affected communities, students are said to suffer from emotional trauma, have low motivation, and limited educational resources. The Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya developed the Signs of Sparkles project through the Rota Tomorrow Competition to assist students recovering from disasters in Yatiyanthota and to further contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.

Focusing on students of Yatiyanthota Siriwardhana Vidyalaya, the project aims to provide opportunities for continuing education after a natural disaster, while also addressing the effects of trauma and providing adequate resources. Research was conducted by the organizing committee on 27 February 2026, and several key issues were identified among students in the affected area. Many students were experiencing emotional and psychological distress, and in some cases entire families had lost their homes. Students’ motivation to continue their studies had been significantly reduced, and school facilities had lost important educational and physical resources.

The project was implemented through several distinct but equally important phases. Phase 2 consisted of a Mental Health Awareness session presented by Mr. Dineth Bamunuarachchige (Mental Health Advisor) to help students better understand and manage their emotions during times of hardship. Additionally, a Motivation and Educational Guidance session was conducted by Mr. Gihan Tharaka Fernando (university student with over three years of teaching experience) to support students with study techniques, help them continue their education, and build their confidence.

Another major part of the project was the online creative competition, held on 30 March 2026. Students from Grades 1–13 were able to participate in multiple categories, such as essay writing, poetry, art, and singing. Due to civil unrest in the country, it was difficult to conduct physical activities; however, the competition was highly successful and provided students with a valuable outlet to express their creativity while gaining a sense of accomplishment and happiness.

In addition, a study note distribution program was initiated for Advanced Level students. The project team collected study materials from multiple sources, organized and compiled them on Google Drive, and distributed them to students through teachers and school WhatsApp groups. Finally, the project team will donate whiteboards to the school to support classroom learning activities.

Not only did Signs of Sparkles help educate students, but it also helped create hope, resilience, and emotional recovery. Through awareness programs, motivational sessions, creative activities, and other educational support, the project successfully encouraged participants to move forward despite the challenges they faced. The overwhelming positive feedback from participants showed that even in the toughest circumstances, a little encouragement and guidance can help someone rediscover their strength and continue pursuing their dreams.

The success of this project was due to the dedication of all involved the 15-member organizing committee, resource persons, donors, and supporters, who worked toward the same goal: creating long-term positive change in society by showing all students that the sun will always shine again.
